After 143 I think it's fair to say that Katy Perry is completely over. Nobody wants her as a popstar, the vote is unanimous. The GP said no, the critics said no, the stans said no. It's fair to say she might never get a hit again.

Yeah and I'm having the time of my life, listening to 143. Like I Woke Up is great, and I can't wait for the next album. She doesn't need a comeback, her legacy is around set in stone.

Yes, but not because 143 giga bombed, but because the biggest problem with this album is herself.

 

She has no artistic direction. Lifeless vocals. She doesn't even sound convinced by her own music. If you don't believe in yourself with conviction, it will show in your music.

 

Generic music isn't a problem for a pop star like Katy. Teenage Dream wasn't exactly full of experimental bops. Hell, even NRO/HIH were good songs despite not being FKA Twigs level of experimentation. 

 

But she sounded convinced by what she was putting out. She believed in herself. Now she's sold out and thought "giving the gays what they want" would be enough to give her an unearned comeback. We can talk about her being problematic till the cows come home, but the truth is people will look past that if the music is good (unfortunately), but Katy doesn't believe this is good music. She had no artistic drive and it showed. 

 

That is the reason she's done for good.

Just because it's over doesn't mean it's really over…  

She is just now a legacy artist. The GP will always be here for her classics, but as far as new stuff she is definitely over.

She needs to stop chasing the hit that won't come and focus on making an album that actually has some substance (and isn't the ludicrous career suicide of making a dated album produced by a very known alleged rapist by the pop stans - the people she's appealing to)

that's fine for this era, but that doesn't define her next one.

There just really isn't a space for a Katy Perry-esque popstar anymore. It is a dying breed. Sabrina seems to be kind of taking her spot in that regard, but to be honest even that I don't see lasting much more than what she's already given. 

Fun, weird and exciting pop is certainly "in" this year, but the ones that have taken off all have an edge to them. There's substance to their lyrics, they have a distinguished niche, and they don't try to go broad or engineer mass appeal (or if they do, it's not blatant TikTok bait). Charli and Chappell are doing great in this arena because of their authenticity. 

 

Katy's best shot is to follow up soon... these long breaks are not helping. She needs to embrace her maturity and not pander, what Madonna was expertly able to do in the 90s. Honestly though, I don't think she has it in her.

Honestly she needs to try a different genre and the results could be remarkably different. Paired back acoustic sounds, guitars, tropical house beats, rock influences, things could really turn on a dime.

Not fully. I think she'll get a huge bump once total nostalgia kicks in for the 10s.

I think she just needs to do proper high profile collabs and not with annoying twinks like zedd or alesso. 

Dance music doesn't come naturally for her because I don't think she ever was a festival party girl.
