It's the worst album of the year, no question. If I had to compare it to another panned release - C,XOXO at least felt like Camilla was inspired & finding her own voice. As odd as the lyrics were, there was a vision & she committed to it. When Katy sang "trippy trippy daddy" on Gimme Gimme, I got viscerally mad. That doesn't mean anything even in an abstract sense. It's just word salad to fill in syllables. These are the worst songs of her career by a landslide & makes an absolute mockery of the pop genre

over 2,576,273 pop albums have been released in 2024. So, you listened to all of them to come to the conclusion?

I didn't.

(But I also think she buried Taylor and Co with 143). <3

There will always be ATRL users whose main point of interest in pop music is if it's '' YAASS UPBEAT GAY CLUB BAWPS!!!! '' and nothing more.

But if you hold pop music as a genre to the standard you hold any other music genre, you will be able to dissect the complete nothingness that the album is. Even as a '' standard pop album '' it's not fun, it's not sexy, it's not interesting, it merely exists as a product to be sold. The album is devoid of any other purpose than to be the most cynical approach to modern pop music imaginable.

trying not to think about it is a masterpiece.

Right, sis! I'm thinking of doing a Discography Rate soon, if I get enough people on board I'll do it. So whoever wants to join just tell me :gaycat4:

Oh and @Big Bad Wolf, I checked the Joni Mitchell issue and I stand corrected, she did not apologize but it's more nuanced than it seems. She really didn't mean it like that. It's a very awkward topic when you read about it with Gen-Z lenses.

It's not a bad album, period end of story. I completely understand how some people may not like this kind of music, but all the exaggerated, grotesque "reviews" of 143 I've been seeing are just baffling.

NEWS FLASH! Music is subjective. What might be a soulless cookie cutter song to you could be a fun, thrilling experience for someone else. And it works the other way around, too.

Katy had a vision for this album: a dance pop record, a "party where everyone is invited" - and she delivered just that. Nothing more, nothing less. Everyone knew what kind of songs we'd be getting, so why act all surprised and offended now that they're out?

I do have to say though, there is something very funny about reading angry paragraphs about how horrible someone thinks an album is :bibliahh: Like okay little miss Music Critic, let it out!! Tell them!

143 is what you'll get when you ask ChatGPT to make you a pop album. It has no redeeming human elements at all

I'm not kidding but I genuinely felt myself going dumb listening to some of these lyrics. I'm not listening again or I'm gonna lose more brain cells with lyrics such as 'Crawling on me like a centipede. Kitty kitty wanna party tonight'. A 13 year old can do better than this on a poetry assignment. The album is straight up trash.

I gave it a few listens and decided, yes, it really is that bad...  :doc:

It's the most soulless formulaic album I've ever heard and I've listened to K-pop since 2010....

It's definitely up there with classics like Camp Rock 2: Live Walmart Soundcheck by Demi Lovato.

But that was a classic :bam:!

It's not good. But honestly its just bad/good as that godawful brat album and people praised that autotune circuit party mess.

It's forgettable but people are panning as hard not related to the music just her working with Luke and for clickbait. Even if the music was better it would still be as panned as it is now.

1.5 from RS.......

.... maybe she should just lean in to being a terrible/trashy pop star now? :gaycat6:

i'll be honest, i'm enjoying it more than Radical Optimism and C,XOXO.

Overall, it's not a very good album. There's a couple of good songs, though. Which is more than I can say for a certain someone's most recent output.

It's just a fun album, but Katy's reputation is in trenches, so sadly nobody is going to treat it fairly.

If this was released in 2010-2012, it would've been a banger and probably smashed. But it's so sorely stuck in a past era of straightforward, unironic, cliche pop music.

No matter how much you hate Katy and the album, it's nowhere near the level of bad that is KF's album - which is not even an album to begin with

So yes it's over-hated

I guess it isn't that bad. I suppose it could've killed someone

Just take a look at other major female albums this year…

Cowboy Carter

Eternal Sunshine

Hit Me Hard & Soft

Girl With No Face

Short & Sweet

The Tortured Poets Department

brat

Radical Optimism

TYLA

Dopamine

… and hell let's even include The Rise and Fall

of a Midwest Princess for good measure :rip:

These all much better bodies of work than 143… I love generic fluffy pop music but 143 feels devoid of any real soul outside of a few key moments.

The reviews are harsh but the music is pretty poor.

Compare it to Katy's other albums (none of which are even all that good) and explain how it's better? Every other album she's released has at least a few tracks that were good or great even. Where is the track on this album that holds up to like 90 percent of the singles from her previous albums? Or even none singles like CAIL, WOA, HH, Roulette? It's mid, the best songs on it are not that good. People are saying it's good because Woman's World is such a horrible song the rest of the album feels better by comparison. I've seen multiple people say it would have smashed in 2014 but really? With those singles. It's her worst album by far.
