Midnights - What went wrong?

Featured Replies

Taylor was releasing back to back quality pop albums with Evermore and Folklore and then MIDnights happened. Was she too focused on the TV albums? Why is Midnights inferior compared to the albums before it

She made a simple mainstream-friendly synthpop album to maximize her ability to capitalize on the renewed popularity folklore and the rerecordings brought to her career, and the album was in fact a maximum success so I’m sorry to say that Midnights went right.

If wrong is winning AOTY and having the biggest tour in history to promote the album, god I hope I'm wrong in the next chapter of my life!

In short, she's in a comfort zone artistically

Her writing on Midnights seems familiar due to her working on it concurrently with the TVs.

Midnights is a great album that is on track to go diamond in a couple years.  Y’all are doing too much.

Nothing went wrong. It's a universally acclaimed, AOTY-winning album that's loved by the fans and the public. :cm:

But ATRL user Josh didn’t enjoy it, so clearly something did go wrong and we must get to the bottom of this immediately.

It truly is one of the blandest albums I've ever heard and I used to be a fan of her music

85 on Metacric, universally acclaimed

AOTY

A multi-week smash hit (Anti-Hero) + an additional hit (Karma)

Nearly 7M album units in the US already, 14M WW

"Did anything go wrong?" is the actual question.

Well...

Anti-Hero, The Great War, Would've Could've Should've, Maroon, Bigger than the whole Sky, you're own you're own kid and High Infidelity are GREAT songs, in some way better than any other Folklore/Evermore tracks

I always thought that she had Midnights more or less done after Lover and then just didn't release it because of the pandemic. And then she wrote the 3AM songs to sorta bridge it closer to where she is now

I feel like Midnights gets too much hate, never really understood why it is so polarizing even among Swifties

Is it even close to her best album? Absolutely not

Did it deserve to win aoty from the standpoint of artistic excellence? Hell no

Is it a fun album with plenty of great tracks? Yeah it totally is

I fail to see "what went wrong" with a commercially successful album that received positive reviews.

While Midnights isn't perfect, let's not forget it's much better than its pop predecessor Loser. And, if nothing else, it's cohesive (at least the standard 13 tracks are)

it won album of the year and sold 1.5M first week

what went RIGHT?

What went wrong?

The album spent more than a year in the top ten, is one of her most successful albums worldwide, had one of her biggest hits in Anti Hero and a cute smash with Karma, was one of the most acclaimed albums of 2022 (top 10 most acclaimed), won AOTY... If that's considered "wrong" then what's considered "right" :gaycat7:

This thread: Midnights is not a quality album

Swifties: we don't care it sold a ton1!!!!11!1! :juanny:

She wanted a massive era and that’s what she got

She knows she can’t release these kind of albums all the time because it would affect her credibility

The praise midnights got was the groundwork of Folklore and Evermore did

The next album has to be a masterpiece if not she will really affect her acclaim

this is the best I've seen someone put it. my girl isn't dumb, she does what she needs to do, when she needs to do it.
