Grammys are bought by record labels. You purchase voting seats from NARAS and whomever purchases the most seats wins. A lot of major artists feel slighted by the behind-the-scenes politics and so they don’t bother to perform for a show with a rigged voting process.

I thought the title said “Janet only has one Grammy”  

 

but yea. I still don’t get it. She should have had performances, at the very least, in 1990, 1994, and 1999. I’d also include 1996 since both her and MJ were nominated for “Scream” and both were in the middle of successful eras (Janet: Design of a Decade; MJ: HIStory)

It was a very different time for pop stars and award recognition. Madonna, Mariah and Whitney don’t have many either (by current standards).

 

At least her one Grammy performance is amazing and iconic!

and Björk has 0 Grammys despite having 16 nominations

Do we really care about the Grammy's considering who are the most awarded females of all times there? 

Grammys don’t respect pop stars who rely heavily on dancing unfortunately 

Grammys didn't look favorably upon pop acts.

What is this nonsense this is not how the academy works. Every musician with credits to their name can affiliate to the academy. I believe they pay for a membership and those are the Grammy voters. Stop attacking the most prestigious award of the music industry because all of your faves are members.

This is incredibly inaccurate. Why would you post this knowing that it isn’t remotely true or that it doesn’t even make sense…

 

It is all about respectability politics and networking. They are not bought. I find it similar to how winners are chosen for a school body election or Homecoming King - Queen or Prom King - Queen in school. The artist campaigns and the more people you work with or know in the industry, the more likely you will win.

 

People laugh about Beyonce and her lengthy songwriting credits but the reason she is the most awarded artist is because she has worked with so many people in the industry and they respect her ethic and output. The same reason why Lionel Richie won over Purple Rain for Album of the Year. Prince stayed to himself and worked in the studio with a small set of people but Lionel Richie wrote, produced, engineered, and so much more for other people and himself. More people in the industry knew him personally.

Love her but her brand of performing is not well suited to the Grammys. Bare midriffs, sexy whisper-vocals and hot dancing is better for the VMA's or the Super Bowl. 

 

It doesn't mean Janet's performance style is bad or that the Grammys are wrong. Just not a good fit. Same reason Adele is not right for the Super Bowl.

The most prestigious award in the industry that routinely shuts artists of color out of the main categories while consistently awarding mediocrity? No thanks.
