Why does R&B do so poorly on streaming?

Featured Replies

Other than SZA's SOS I'm not seeing much R&B in the Spotify charts :deadbanana2:

It's a mixed bag. Some of them like Rihanna's ANTI are juggernauts on streaming

It’s mostly consumed by the black community, whereas other black pioneered genres like hip hop crossed over to white audiences, R&B didn’t.

Hopefully acts like SZA can start to revitalize R&B going forward!

most R&B artists have to appeal to pop or white demographic in order to see success in streaming. colorism also plays a role.

Like Rock, the genre is in hibernation right now after peaking in the '90s. It'll come back around, albeit in a different form or perhaps as a hybrid with another genre.

Summer’s domination on Apple Music during her Still Over It era leads me to think that several of the ladies could be seeing huge eras potentially

I wonder why #they don’t like r&b? It’s such a sultry smooth genre that fits for all moods.

Right now, people prefer moody music with mumble vocals. Meanwhile R&B usually requires the artist to SING and have some pipes. It will probably come back, hopefully sooner than later.

Same reason rap music isn’t massive worldwide unless it’s from that countries own artist.

It’s not as popular as rap or pop right now, and arguably hasn’t been dominant since like 2004. Elder millennials and Gen X’s consumed it mostly growing up. But it’s just not buzzing outside of maybe 2-3 mainstream acts today

Transitioning phase to amapiano trend which should explode on next year. Honest mention on few songs in Chris brown latest album, they could pull mainstream hit if r&b artists got it right + label supporting.

Tbh only alt r&b is interesting. Classic R&B sound is very one note. Most people prefere melody over rythm.

I think it’s the vocal layering and sometimes mature themes. It’s very much an adult genre to me, and kids gravitate towards pop and rap.

Because they mostly aren't listening to it on Spotify % share wise compared to Apple Music.

Damage by H.E.R. is 3X Platinum eligible(equals 450+ million streams) in the US and hasn't crossed 100 Million on Spotify yet

They do, just not to the same extent. Also it currently isn't being marketed to WW audiences on TTH playlists unless it goes viral on Tik Tok

For one, Daniel Caesar is huge in the Philippines, that's actually his biggest market currently.

This isn't true, R&B was much more popular decades ago lol

60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 1st half of 2000s all had major chart success.

@Rotunda my good sis with the Streaming Degree.

Oh the GYM. Ok munchkin. Make sure you stream MY HOUSE. To combat this narrative about Beyoncé and other R&B singers. Kisses

Another R&B artist, Brent Faiyaz has been outstreaming yall main Pop boys on US Spotify for months but y'all don't pay attention to him so....

A lot of R&B girls are outstreaming on Apple Music all the girls that are popular on Spotify. There was a brief time this year when Me, Myself and I was charting pretty high on Apple Music and it was nowhere to be seen on Spotify.

Rap is literally huge, be forreal :skull:

Kanye, Drake, Travis, XXXTentacion, Juice Wrld, Kendrick etc aren't local acts.

It’s a local genre for the most part but has amazing numbers in the US. Summer Walker, Jhene, and Sza all reached multi-platinum with their albums from Apple Music and US Spotify. They also have hits that are 5-6x platinum (Love Galore, The Weekend, Playing Games,Broken Clocks and Girls Need Love) that come from mostly AM.
