What made the SOUR era so MASSIVE?

Featured Replies

In 2021, a relatively unknown Disney Channel actress released her debut single. To everyone’s surprise, the song skyrocketed to number one within a matter of days. The song stayed on top of the hot 100 for 8 weeks. Her success didn’t stop there. She released another SMASH hit number one Good 4 u, (a song that would’ve been the song of the summer had BTS “butter” not blocked it with its sales). Deja Vu, was also another smash hit peaking at #3 and had amassed over a billion streams on Spotify. Traitor peaked in the top 10 and has also surpassed the Billion mark.

Olivia then went onto embark on a sold out world tour, and won many awards including 3 Grammys.

So what made this era so successful? Before any of you say Paramore or Taylor, people fell in love with Olivia, thus the longevity of her album. But how did an unknown Disney actress become the it girl in ONE year?

A perfect storm of her ex and the side chick getting together, along with her being under 21 because the tik tok demographic claims her

The material is just really good, sans brutal.

Once I gave the album I chance I was blown away (pun intended) by the quality. Her melodies are gorgeous and her lyricism is on point.

It's the perfect combination of drama, great music and hits after hits after hits.

I hope she doesn't take too long to come back with OR2. She has the potential to build a very successful career based on her debut and even if I'm not necessarily a fan I want to see where she's going.

Add in riding off the coats of a massive star, a borderline legend, and this is what you get. A perfect storm. Her getting the Swifties on her side whether people like it or not was a significant factor in her success.

Kids love her rehearsed persinal drama and Swifties followed her because she claims Taylor to be her big influence.

Her next first single will probably do well because there is some hype left, but other singles and the album will fall short :celestial6:

Right album at the right moment. Z- Kids want reletable lyrics for the tik toks and pop stars with a real narrative, not only pop bops and they don't care about hairographies.

The moment Billie became less pop with the second album they switched to Olivia coming at the same moment with a very radio friendly, palatable and easy listening sad pop album in the moment this kind of market was already grewing up on then (folklore, lana, billie, tom odell etc..).

Very on-trend with the Y2K sound/aesthetics, viral relationship drama, relatability, and stamp of approval from Swifties and Ms Swift herself

Being a great album from a brand new artist who was already smashing with the lead singles.

Tiktok. I don't think it would've been that huge if it came out before tiktok.

the drama with ex, i mean she and her team were excelent by copying someone else's success path.

OTH were saying only swifties were supporting her when DL blew up so it must be that :bird:

Rught timing  and as much as I dont care about SOUR, it's easy to get through

It’s a good and relatable album with hits to go along with it.  The narrative and drama catalyzed attention and the music kept people’s attention.

(now she just needs to give us OR2 before people lose attention)
