K-Pop Thread: 2023 Archive

This is part 1 of the K-Pop Thread: 2023 Archive discussion.

I thought it was strange enough that Hybe America randomly bought Quality Control, but for Hybe to turn and try to swiftly snatch SM up like this :deadbanana2: Perched for the super random collabs to possibly come from this, but its safe to say Hybe ended the Big 3 era of K-Pop.

2023 is already shaping up to be the most interesting year in K-Pop and we haven't even got to the big debuts or contract renewals yet

WJSN have like two weeks before there's is up and Starship has been way too quiet for my taste :dancehall2:

i doubt hybe has that much power over contract renewals/negotiations

I believe hybe decided to disband gfriend or it was RBW the one that disbanded other gg, im not so sure but I believe it was hybe, most of gfriend fandom hated le sserafim on their debut because of it

I kinda hate the idea of anyone buying out SM, but I’m much more comfortable with HYBE doing it than K*kao.

I think IU is way too big to be a casualty. If anything the labels will go into a bidding war to grab her if her label goes down.

But for what they are fighting (int $$$) she is not that relevant. IU and Bae Jong Hae (her ex manager and current CEO) sold part of their shares, and now Kakao has 52% of Edam. The company is expanding, but still totally depending on her, she will not leave I fear.

I can't see HYBE wanting any of Kakao subsidiaries. Kakao is unable to create any big idol company, even though they have all the resources, that's why they want SM.

But if she active her sly fox side and decides to leave Edam... then i believe they would accept her asap. :bird:
Sing I-Land theme was probably Bang PD's request
Also he defended her twice

Whew, we're literally witnessing the death of the vocalist in k-pop as we know it.

it's kind of gone that way for a while now tho. even sm vocalists aren't what they used to be.

twitter is killing me

This has me SCREAMING

Choose which side of history you stand with wisely KTRL…

Doesn't Korea have antitrust laws? Why are they allowing Hybe to create this glaring monopoly in the industry?

I saw GFRIEND slander and thought to myself how KTRL never changes even after evolution from trogolodytes (atrl) to current homosapiens (stan Twitter).

Y’all will never put respect to groups who don’t come from a company who’s logo has the same colour as a prolapse hole or the same colour as piss from a diabetic patient.

GFRIEND (with lovelyz) has gave birth to some of these 4th gen groups so put some respect to their names.

SM was doing fine what happened :rip:

Yeah they had to pay taxes but they earned second only to HYBE these past couple of years so wtf gives

HYBE pays better so they lost some key employees (MHJ, especially).

But really, this isn’t happening because SM is doing poorly - 2022 was their biggest year ever. This is happening because there’s an internal fight between family members and both parties want to spite each other.

It’s why the Bang family is so much smarter. One brother built a music empire and the other built a mobile gaming empire and they’ve used the profits to absolutely devour everyone.

None of this would have happened if LSM wasn’t a greedy scammer who is leeching money from SM by forcing them to use his production company that takes insanely high profit margins.

SM effectively wants to get rid of any routes LSM gas set up within the company to syphon money “legally”

The problem with SM is that they have too many legacy acts. There's absolutely no reason that throwback acts like Super Junior, TVXQ and BoA having more than one comeback within a year not to mention prioritising them over newer act like aespa and NCT dream. I think neither KaoKao nor HYBE would be happy about that so yeah we should get ready for GFRIEND situation 2.0:redface:

Yg better fight for BP because they don’t renew YG is pretty much over.

I will say it right now, in terms of potential, BLACKPINK has the ability to do miles beyond what BTS has achieved, the only thing holding them back is really their own ******* label. Had they been under HYBE or whatever competent label, with actual constant releases and sensible promo cycles, they would be neck in neck with BTS globally easily.

So YG better act right before HYBE attempts to steal BLACKPINK under YGs nose or Warner or Republic from the U.S. tries to do as well.

So it’s basically giving a monopoly to HYBE in an attempt to prevent each other from making more money? How petty is that :rip:

How is that a problem? Having these groups with longevity and legacy is one of SM's strengths

the problem with the "Blackpink would be much bigger under a different label" argument is that It’s flawed.

No other company, especially the other big 3, would’ve been able to create the exact Blackpink sound, aesthetic, image or visuals. Which leads to the question if they wouldve ever been as as successful.

Truth is that if you take BP out of YG a huge part of their artistic identity is being taken away as well

From fan's perspective yes and I love that! But from a business perspective, those act usually got high contract renewal fee while general album release and touring might barely cover it.

So is the new SM girl group and SM boy group still happening this year or is Hybe gonna scrap that?

the only way BP under ANY other label would work is if Teddy and RTee came with them alongside their 2 go to MV directors
