K-Pop Thread: 2023 Archive

SM does sometimes love to change and evolve their acts, I mean look at SNSD + Taeyeon they've done every concept and sound under the sun.

Red Velvet has generally been more conservative, in that they've mostly stuck to the 'quirky/fun' concept with the odd r&b bside. But even then, there has been some evolution in their sound, especially since the early years.

I guess its easier for me to accept this change for Aespa because it's what I was expecting SM to do after Girls' underperformance. 'Futuristic hyperpop noise' is not as versatile of a sound for a Kpop group as Red Velvet's is. There needed to be change at some point, maybe it's just come earlier than expected.

Maybe other girls will get back on board after some time for the change to settle in. Plus, it seems that the girls themselves are happy to get away from their old concept so let's be happy for them about that :skull:

Spicy seems VERY Itzy to me... question is whether it's good Itzy (most of their tracks) or bad Itzy (Sneakers)...

I don't mind the change-up in their style. I love and am still listening to Hold On Tight. None of the teasers are really doing it for me yet, but they're just teasers. We'll keep an open mind. :gaycat2:

Honestly though, aespa is disappointing from the standpoint that SM could have done SO much more musically than the likes of Savage and...Girls.

This is the music I expected from aespa with their concept:

Like I guess I was delusional for thinking SM would actually bring something new to Kpop sonically.

It's pretty crazy to expect SM to be an agent of change when they were the ones that set the tone for the entire K-pop industry in the first place. :deadbanana: At the end of the day, the foundation of K-pop is built on formula and mass consumption. It's vapid, shallow and non-threatening, which is exactly the reason it has attracted the mass following it has.

aespa was always meant to be a commercial group (just as any other SM act, and every other K-pop act in general). Their concept is purposeful for the sake of diversity and setting them apart, but there's an obvious cap to how far they can push eccentricity without losing commercial appeal (Savage). The group is meant to succeed in the market, above all. From a business perspective, SM is not stupid enough to purposely market them in a way that's so obnoxious and unpalatable that they alienate the masses completely (which they ran the risk of doing with Girls).

Plus, as per the girls, they were the ones that demanded a new course in the first place, and seemed to have genuinely enjoyed doing so.

Poor you. This will be in your head for the next week at least. You'll wake up with nananananaknocknocknkock in your head, think about in your dreams, hum it everywhere you go.

Just left the TXT concert and it was incredible. They really know how to keep the energy up when not performing, also my vocal chords are shot from screaming so much. I had a lot of fun. Also they look just as hot in real life as they do on camera.

See this is what YG get for not using the 99 other producers in the company for BP, the way iKon Rum Pum Pum is literally crack.

One flop and they dropped their concept :gaycat6:

pots and pans title for the Q4 comeback!

No they havent. The teaser is very blatant bait and switch and the rest of the song sounds different. It's about to be Next Level 2.0

Next Level, the spiritual successor to IGAB by SNSD. I would be in tears :chick3:

You heard the song or are just saying this from the MV teaser and leaks?

Not to say I'm right bc I haven't heard the song fully but I'm pretty sure that teaser is a bait based on what the leaked snippet sounded like that I leaked. It'd make sense why Supervillain called it a "return to form" too.

Another leaked snippet, this time w Ningning opening the chorus. From the little you can hear it sounds like it transitions into the portion we've heard in the teaser. The first snippet that leaked from the pool set doesn't sound like that at all.

The teaser part sounds so melodic here!

The new girl group is right around the corner, June ? So I wonder what direction they will go now since aespa is going a new sound direction.

Let's not drag Ms RPPP when Red Light was the real enemy and the reason they got shelved.

Is the SM situation at all any similar to the fantagio situation in 2018?
