Sunmi’s not fluent but her English is iconic lmao.

Also she speaks it better than most non native speakers. I just wish she smashed internationally. She has the music and personality for it. Oh well, in another life I guess.

Spoiler

tiktok viraliTY should make it happen though :gaycat6:

Sorry y’all but this English speaker comparison is so weird lol. Especially when you’re doing it among people who were born or raised in English speaking countries. Ofc they’re gonna be fluent in English since they spent time there during their formative years.

now let’s talk about idols who didn’t really grow up in English speaking countries but have really good English like CL or Jackson Wang (even though he’s from hongkong so idk if I should count him).

English-speaking idols (native or not) is such a dynamic concept in general to me. I’m always baffled when I take idols in account that had never set foot in an anglophonic country prior, but have immaculate enunciation in English like CL and Giselle (though I’ve heard that English is actually Giselle’s primary language), but you have native speakers like Mark Tuan that are perplexing accented or have weird diction, despite spending most of their formative years speaking the language.

Of all idols BoA still impresses me the most with her language skills. Despite debuting at age 13 she somehow found the time to become completely fluent in Japanese and very strong in English too :skull: A savant

Japanese skill has really decreased among idols over the years as the market has become less relevant. In 2nd gen you had whole groups that spoke at least decent Japanese, like Kara and Shinee. Now you're lucky to have one ethnic Japanese member and that's the extent of it

CL and Giselle attended international schools from a young age, so were taught in English, that's why they are so good at it.

In fact, when aespa first debuted, J-netz bashed Giselle for sounding "foreign" in Japanese, so English really is her strongest language it seems, probably down to her schooling growing up.

she’s kinda close tbh! her onstage banter for the GGGM tour was great and clear, and she even had some quick rapport with the crowd at times

like yeah she has to work at it a little, but she’s able to joke around and stuff which is really fun

also unrelated but this just reminded me that someone gave her a (new!) bra at the end of my show :dies:

neeeed the tiktok twinks to make her choreo go viral

yeah it all depends on the individual I believe. Because I’ve seen firsthand examples of people immigrating to the US way before me from their motherlands but my American accent is way stronger than theirs. I think there’s a lot of factors that define a person’s speaking style.

Yes, that seems to be the common thread for English-speaking foreign idols. It's the case for Jackson, as well. Those expensive international schools are incredibly thorough.

I realized Giselle likely wasn't 100% perfect with the Japanese language when aespa performed there last year, and she stumbled for a few words in her monologue. :dies:

Are there any k-pop boy groups that can beat SM BG's when it comes to weird music and fashion? :cm:

The only ones I can think of is early VIXX and BIGBANG. (But only the fashion, not the music)

I miss how ridiculous they looked before 2018. :sorry:

And just like that, the k-pop industry was never the same. :worship2:

It was camp, thank you EXO. :clap3:

I'm kinda surprised Lee Know cbar was that low considering his popularity in China. But then again this is just first day of preorders so anything could happen.

I just don't get why Mnet chose him over Jay or Yoo Seungeon :rip: He's literally a Kim Jaehwan 2.0 :coffee2:

Because he's the WK1 trainee there's no way all of them didn't debut that's why Mnet reveal his finale interim placement at #11 in order for his fanbase (mostly Korean) to vote for him. Notice that Mnet partial interim placement was all WK1 trainee and Shanbin who's at #3 probably behind Zhang Hao and Matthew :coffee2:

Matthew and Taerae might be the new Dayeon and Chaehyun in ZB1 I fear considering Matthew was the PD choice from what I knew cause only watch Boys Planet highlights. Cnetz truly obsessed with Matthew because of that and all of them melting down and threatening to destroy his photocard when he revealed to debut at #3.

They’re way more relevant with the GP than any 4th gen bg that’s for sure. For their own generation, I guess they’re not as big as EXO or BTS with the GP but have had their own share of well known GP hits like Aju Nice, Pretty U, Don’t Wanna Cry etc which charted well and had longevity in Korea. Plus they’re still consistently charting well with their title tracks to this day as we can see with SUPER and that’s already an indication of good GP support. If it was just fanbase, they probably would have fallen after the first day itself.

Are u really ignoring seungkwan popularity in Korea? I mean he even won awards for his variety skills :giraffe:
