Wendy was not raised in Canada. She was born in Korea and moved to Canada around age 11 and stayed there till she was around 18 which was when she was casted by SM. Her parents and sister live in Canada, so that's why she now has citizenship.

 

When she arrived in Canada she didn't speak a lick of English, so the fact she managed to acquire English with zero accent is super impressive. But she's suffering the typical deterioration of ESL people who stop speaking it as much in their daily lives.

 

I don't think Mark is the "best" English speaker though, even though he's native. Johnny is literally right there and better than him for example, and there are plenty others.

funny that you mentioned that cause I was literally watching a year end gayo last night and Wendy was singing and I was saying to myself “why does her English sound so weird, she’s from Canada” I feel like she’s been in Korea for so long she’s starting to sing in Konglish loll it’s weird

Yeah when she debuted she sounded native, since she'd only left Canada 2 years ago. But these days it's a little hit and miss. She still sounds fluent singing in English though imo. Her collab with John Legend has no accent etc. for example. It's just talking that seems awkward for her.

From birth up until he graduated high school. He only travelled to Korea during the summers to train, and went back home as the school year started.

Sorry y’all but this English speaker comparison is so weird lol. Especially when you’re doing it among people who were born or raised in English speaking countries. Ofc they’re gonna be fluent in English since they spent time there during their formative years. 
 

now let’s talk about idols who didn’t really grow up in English speaking countries but have really good English like CL or Jackson Wang (even though he’s from hongkong so idk if I should count him). 
 

and idk I should count Vernon from seventeen but he was born in New York and moved to Korea at age four so technically he only learned English by speaking it with his parents at home. So in that regard, he speaks it really well.

Basically he was still "in" Chicago because he was a part time trainee and only trained during summers at first. He still continued high school in Chicago and only trained full time in Korea after he graduated high school.

 

He was being finalized for EXO but was cut late in the process, so that made his training period even longer until he was added to NCT 127.
