I think maybe it was the demonisation of disco that caused her to not get as much credit as she deserved? Though she's still beloved and known all over tbe world. I hope tiktok discovers her in the way they discovered Kate Bush. 

Underrated? No. Underappreciated, yes. She is incredibly influential. I Feel Love, Last Dance, Love to Love You Baby, This Time I Know It's For Real, On The Radio, Bad Girls, State of Independence, Hot Stuff & She Works Hard For The Money are all immaculate songs.

This album is amazing. I love the concept, like a trip through time into the future. She really made albums like stories. 

An absolute legend  Not only was she a pioneer regarding disco she had such an amazing voice  She was indeed the queen of disco but she explored much more genres than that, her 1982 album that is a mix of R&B, soul and funk is one of my favs by her:

She's always hailed as the Queen of Disco when talking about the genre, but I feel like often people don't talk about the impact she's had on music as a whole. Pop/Dance music wouldn't be what it is today without Donna Summer. 
 

Her music has influenced, directly and indirectly, every generation of pop stars that followed. 

No, she's pretty accurately rated, as The Queen of Disco, a Legendary artist and vocalist as well as a staple in electronic music . One of the best vocalists in pop culture my opinion.

She is literally the Queen of Disco. 

She's the Queen of Disco but still underrated, if you ask me. 

 

For nstance, I hear of certain younger artists getting credit for pushing sexuality and breaking down barriers when Donna Summer was groaning and simulating orgasms in the 70's already...in mainstream singles at that. 

 

But we all know meritocracy doesn't exist in this industry. 

I wouldn’t say she’s underrated, she is the Queen of Disco after all. However, like OP said many people aren’t aware how much contribution Donna Summer made towards her music both penmanship and production wise which would impact pop and dance music as a whole and inspire a lot of our faves. (Kylie, Madonna, Beyoncé to name a few.) She was also a phenomenal vocalist and even went toe to toe with Babs on their legendary duet. Overall, I’d say her music is anything but underrated. But her contributions to music definitely are.

 

All that being said, artists today wish they could record a 17 minute medley of pure Disco bliss:

This! She really help mold what it is to be a pop star, the hits, the looks, the innovation, the dance focus, the boundaries she pushed, how provocative she was. 
 

Even someone like Selena more than 30 years ago was influenced by her. 

We need the biopic with the one true gay icon™ Kelly Rowland portraying her.
