I am glad Beyonce used her sample in Summer Renaissance. Yes, she has plenty of iconic hits that stood the test of time. But what many people don't know is she wrote a lot of her music and was the creative genius behind her sound along with the legendary Giorgio Moroder. She broke down a lot of barriers, helped create EDM, one of the first female artists to have a controlling hand in their music, pushed the limits of disco, and had an amazing and versatile voice. 

 

But when the conversation about influential artists comes up, she's rarely mentioned. And this has been called out by the likes of Elton John on her not getting her recognition when she was alive when she was nominated into the Rock and Roll HOF.

I love these, On the Radio was the first song I heard from her from my parents when I was a kid. 

 

And she managed to keep her voice for a long time, like this Grammy winning 90s dance bop. Like she was even doing a bit of opera. The sheer vocals

 

i was thinking this a few months ago. she was basically what the MPGs aim to be musically today. she has banger after banger and she isn't mentioned nearly enough today. it feels like she was ahead of the curb musically when you compare her to others. shes such a legend

It’s so good!

 

I didn’t even realize that I Will Go With You (Con Te Partiro) was hers. It’s a staple on my gay tunes workout playlist (yes, really lol). 

She’s not at all underrated in my realm. She’s the queen if disco, no arguments tolerated.

I would recommend checking out one of her greatest hits collections. The Ultimate Collection is a good one to start with as it is more single focused. It includes some of her singles from the beginning of her career that weren't as successful. 

But in terms of albums, Once Upon A Time and Bad Girls. Those showcase some of her best songwriting coupled with the fabulous productions. And of cours VOCALS VOCALS VOCALS.

I feel like underrated is a bit of a disrespectful word to call Donna as she is regarded as the queen of Disco (which btw is one of the most popular genres nowadays after its 2020 reinvention/revival) but yeah people don't give her enough credit for her artistry.

 

She's waaaay more than a vocalist and was actually willing to experiment with new sounds and melodies on her records. She also brought trance to the mainstream scene. Truly one of the most creative artists of all time
