Forgot to add that HOMECOMING is her best if that counts and one of like 10 of my true 10/10 projects i do love a band tho so kinda cheating

Truly the definitive live album of... all time? The way she weaved the songs together and the live instrumentation whew. She did that... too.

CC is 27 tracks and 79 minutes long. And many songs contain multiple tracks. A typical album is 10-12 tracks and 45 ish minutes. It's a long album. It's literally full.

Long and bloated aren't the same thing. I don't think CC is excessively (key word) long.

Did you not hear Bodyguard? 2 Hands 2 Heaven? American Requiiem? Daughter? Tyrant?

 

 

While I hear you, IASF has Halo, Diva, Ego, IIWAB, WDYLM, Scared of Lonely, and more. I love the songs you mentioned but those songs are competing against 17 years of nostalgia, videos, and performances. 

4 is the combination of all her albums before, but masterfully crafted (and mixed!). It is also the first time she looked at the trends in music and said NO.

Without 4 we wouldn't have the self-titled - cowboy carter run we have now. 

 

And I sleep peacefully knowing FAVE prefers 4 as well, B'day stans will be LUCKY to have a song featured in a interlude for the setlist. 

The real tea is that as a full body of work B'Day >>>  4.

 

4 definitely has some undeniable career highlights, but unfortunately as a complete record it's a bit inconsistent and doesn't really know what it wants to be. Thankfully, she really learned how to structure an eclectic album from ST onward. B'Day, on the other hand, is fully realized and doesn't pull any punches

CC is, to me, comparable to a motion picture. You start your journey in the evening and end it at the bonfire at night where u reminisce about your life, then a new day begins with the radio channel and THE playing. You go on a roadtrip first and later on hit the clubs in the midwest. Afterwards you go home riding a horse and heading for the church.

 

Renaissance is more like a whole mood while partying the night. Its like exploring a HUGE club with different floors, with dark rooms, with chill lounges. It just completely takes you on a high and Summer Renaissance is the moment when the light goes on and you feel the drugs settling down while you are with your friends and are holding the dick of a stranger. 

 

Lemonade is an artpiece that truly depict all the emotions that a human being feels when being cheated on. So layered, so nuanced, so detailed. A magnum opus.

 

Thats why these 3 remain her best albums, no matter the streams or what not. She. Did. That.

 

 

IASF may be her worst album but it's still a bonafide classic and that's why these other artists can never compare 

 

Thats Why You're Beautiful is STILL a career highlight  

"Cowboy Carter is too long" argument never held much water for me because it's literally about 10 minutes longer than Renaissance if you take out the spoken interludes from Linda, Dolly and Willie. and I do not considers those as something that can "bloat" an album.

 

it's the 27-track length so many people focused on but it's not much longer than Renaissance, which was 16 tracks.

well if you can't skip a handful of 30-ish second clips of country music LEGENDS talking to or about Beyoncé when you're replaying the album that's your problem  the album would be down to 23 tracks without SMOKE HOUR, DOLLY P, SMOKE HOUR II and LINDA MARTELL SHOW. those aren't songs and mainly serve a purpose on your first listen (and whenever you want to immerse yourself in it). most people wouldn't bat an eye at 23 songs on an album, not anymore.

 

my main issue is, Cowboy Carter isn't that long. it's a long album, sure, and anyone can criticize its length. but the discourse around the length was and still remains exaggerated.

 

I especially found it infuriating that people were comparing it to The Tortured Ears Department. the number of "tracks" might be similar (31 on that album) but that album exceeds 2 full hours. it's practically as long as Renny + CC combined

Because that is relative to the material itself and also sequencing. And track count matters in that too. It's not much longer time-wise, but it feel a lot longer listening-wise.

 

Renaissance is very consistent quality wise, it keeps you engaged throughout the entire run and it is very well structured. It just flows. Cowboy Carter has many sections that feel like they drag on for far too long and there's more than a few songs that are flat out uninteresting and add nothing to the overall narrative or soundscape of the album, if not straight out bad (looking at Spagehtii, regardless of how some people try to claim we 'just don't get it').

 

There's good (great even) music on Cowboy carter but it didn't stick the landing when it comes to the execution. There was a review when it came out I forgot which one that said something among the lines of 'there's a Renaissance in the rough there if you remove the unnecessary parts' and I couldn't agree more with the sentiment.

What is said is CC is long and a bit bloated. I tend to listen to albums all the way through, from top to bottom. In my view, it was not necessary to include the random 30 second talking clips, fake radio noise and there are too many interludes. I'm not sure why that's so hard to understand. Some of those things could have been cut and it wouldn't have sacrificed the quality or music.

 

Your frustrations about comparing this to TTPD has nothing to do with me. I've never even listened to that album. It's too long.

well, in my view, your opinion isn't a fact and there can be opposing views.

 

I still think the "CC is bloated/too long" discourse is tired and exaggerated. it a lazy critique of the art that values form over content. a lot of people (not saying this is you, specifically) had trouble seeing past the length, failing to engage with the album in any meaningful way because they were so hyper fixated on how long it was.
