Beyoncé

This is part 1 of the Beyoncé discussion.

I just noticed the use of paparazzi/photographers at the end of SPAGHETTII and how it aligns to the lyrics right before... her mind, slipping in these little tiny aural references that feel like mere texture but actual illuminate the meaning...

I'm still mad at how badly they integrated Spirit into the original remake. And that it was taken from the end credits and rushed into the film with no clear purpose or sense of logic considering every other song is performed by the characters except this one which is Nala's voice soundtracking Simba running home... imo, it really should have been nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars but it not getting its best moment really took away the chances.

The way I'm still digesting this album and come out with new thoughts every day :jonnycat:

However, RIIVERDANCE > 2H2H > TYRANT > SHB will never be topped I fear.

That gas station thing is interesting, the crypticness is so frustrating. :monkey: I hope the visuals have an element of horror/thriller to them, I want to be unnerved:jonny5:

I can't believe we thought we'd get shining visuals on halloween. Oh to be young and innocent

Coincidentally, Disney JUST posted about BIK. As in a few minutes ago.

Possibly nothing, possibly them just getting in on the heat around Bey's name at the moment, but I legit don't recall them pushing BIK much beyond its initial launch. Something that has always perplexed me given that its ever-green content (thanks to the Lion King tie-in).

From Black History Month to Women's History Month to any and every moment Beyonce's name is hot in the mainstream press, I would "expect" a fresh push. Especially given the much larger audience Disney+ has compared to when BIK debuted.

Possibly delulu, but wondering aloud if Disney could be in the mix for the CC visuals?

It would be interesting becaus maybe conjecture, but I've always felt there was a lil sourness on both ends following BIK. Mama Tina's post about them "not promoting" BIK a year or so after was telling about the internal sentiment on Bey's end and Disney seemingly doing nothing with it post-release spoke volumes to me.

Again, total conjecture, but I guess maybe Bey was promised heaven and earth in terms of push and didn't get it. While Disney may have expected more traction on the basis of Beyonce'name.

I settle somewhere in the middle.

On the one hand, Disney are DISNEY. So, they have the corporate muscle to have made BIK a thing-thing. New platform (at the time) or not. Plus, as mentioned above, there have been bountiful opportunities to re-heat it and get more eyeballs on it (thus making it "worth" whatever they spent on it.

At the same time, Bey's no-promo thing was always going to bite her in the behind at some point and dare I say humble her.

Creating a visual masterpiece and letting it "do it's thing" was never going to be the tea. She had a very reclined approach to promo for The Lion King too (probably because she had a whole album and visual in motion), but still her hands-off approach is just not beneficial all the time.

If I were Disney, I would have MANDATED a certain amount of promo if buying into whatever film she was making. From a proper BTS doc to a live concert that would have followed the movie to a fixed number of high-profile appearances.

I get the vibe BOTH sides were too laxed and came out feeling a way.

Mama Tina was mad that they did not promote the film, actually!

I'm not sure why they were perplexed that Disney didn't go full fledged promo, but they did good promotion for an app exclusive film. They had multiple commercials and ads, some that were featured on TV doing the prime time, web ads (though most are based on searches and interest), she did an 'exclusive' send-in video on GMA, who we're doing great coverage on the film, but that was it.

Besides the actual film, I don't see what Parkwood did in partnership with Disney. If there wasn't any preliminaries set in place, how were they expecting for promo to be more than what it was? They already partnered for "The Lion King: The Gift", which did okay in terms of charts & success, as well as "Beyoncé Presents: Making The Gift" airing on ABC.

They should've released videos before the film, not on the same day as the film. This would've gave ppl more to see, besides "SPIRIT", that no one liked, and "BIGGER", that ppl seemed not to know of. I'm sure that was more so Bey than Disney.

Also, I know, for myself, I brought up "BLACK IS KING" in relation to the visuals for the reason of the quality of visuals and as they relate to the story of the album. I believe the film is a her greatest visual work and miles ahead of "LEMONADE". I don't think anyone should use it as an example of the timeframe between ACTS-VISUALS. "THE GIFT", though framed as a love letter to Africa and a continuation of the contract between Bey and Disney, the album isn't comparable to a main BEYONCÉ album. A great album, but as I said earlier, it's not as important as BIK. And the film's conversation lasted for months in general public coverage, not a sad 2 weeks. Looks from the film were talking points for Halloween 2020 and "ALREADY" had a small viral moment. The era was good for what it was.

Provocative question:

How "impactful" do u consider Bey and CC to be when its tumbling down literally all major charts in week 2 and thus in the following weeks?

Like ill be real: She once said "people dont make albums anymore", but I feel we could change that to "people dont make eras anymore". I also fail to defend CC "impact" post week 1 when its like a big bang in week 1 and in week 3 its literally generating less than 80% less streams and thus less interest. Its not holding up well at all tbh

I agree with a lot of this.

Ultimately, I get the sense that both sides feel they did their bit but with more meeting in the middle more could have come from the partnership.

Like you highlighted, Disney did a lot to push (from the view of using BIK it to push subscriptions for an early Disney+) but the point about them doing little else after the launch window remains.

BIK is ever-green content (serviceable for everything from Black History Month to Women's History Month) and to date is the most recent Beyonce visual, so is something they can and should be reheating constantly. It helps that it's a great film too, so gives them cool points having it exclusively on their service...especially at times like now (see: waiting for the Rennie/CC visuals).

While I agree that The Gift / BIK shouldn't be compared to how the Acts are being handled and were largely additives to the Beyonce output rather than essential parts of her main music career, I am still extremely annoyed at how the whole thing went down.

I don't agree the it was truly maximized in terms of reach. Huge portions of the literal BeyHive either admit to "sitting out" the era or literally not knowing about it. Was flicking through the comments on a bootleg upload of the Water video on YT and this was confirmed. So many "I have never heard this song before" and "OMG this is amazing, I just saw it on Facebook". That's wild and grating given how amazing the entire Gift/BIK material and visuals are.

I reserve a bit of grace for Bey in that we don't know what may have been going on with her at the time, but I also feel it's another example of her promo-less antics having an upper limit in its effectiveness. With such a specific and arguably controversial title and angle, there should have been a more potent push. Side project or not.

The upside of all of the The Gift/BIK misstep and her revitalized streaming presence is that the next "side-venture" is now setup to do better out of the gate and her team have better insights as to how to ensure a certain level of performance (like having physicals).

This still gets me, and I wonder if it's partially a reflection of Beyonce's feelings as well because I'm sure they discussed it together as they're really close.  It's doubtful that Tina felt strongly about it enough to post about it without ever mentioning it and discussing it with Beyonce.  Makes me wonder if she thinks the promotion lies outside of her, which is a strange thought considering she owns her own music/production company and has to know how important promoting your work is.  From our perspective, she hardly has done any promotion herself, whatsoever, and hasn't in more than a decade, it was just a strange talking point IMO.  Like girl, you don't even promote your own work :rip:

Speaking of promotion, II MOST WANTED is down to #47 on Today's Top Hits, which makes no sense, and was NOT sent to radio, despite being the best performing song on the album outside of Texas and being top 30 on pop radio on it's own.  In the streaming era it's customary to push a second single out during release week because that momentum is unparalleled, and if a song is already playing well on it's own, waiting to seize on that only hinders the performance, people lose interest, radio loses interest.  Why invest money into these billboards and posters instead of actually pushing your music to more ears?  It just seems counterintuitive to me.  The best forms of music promotion are playlists, performances, music videos, a sense of relateability with the general public to help them connect to a song by engaging fans in some capacity, not weird Billboards or posters that people don't pay attention to.

There have been two album charts announced so far this week:

Australia: #1 for 2nd week

New Zealand: #3 (one new release ahead)

The UK chart will be announced today, where Bey will either be #2 or #3, with one or two new releases ahead of it.

To say it's "tumbling down literally all major charts in week 2" is very much not true. :rip:

since the album came out, i was trying to put together a setlist. it's kinda done, but i'm not satisfied. maybe i'll post it here later

The fact there is absolutely nothing happening when she just had an organic #1 (no matter how much I HATE that dxmn song) and a a second single that has been critically acclaimed (though it suffered tremendously since being a dual single) is crazy, even for her self sabotage!

She didn't even abandon her magnum opus "RENAISSANCE" this early. She at least teased visuals multiple times before going home. "II MOST WANTED" hasn't been sent to radio or even used as a promotional single. No visualizer, lyric video premiere, mention in bio- Columbia should've just sent it anyway.

In a perfect label "TYRANT" would be sent to urban, Hip-Hop/R&B radio this summer for the ppl who aren't fully interested in country, no matter if it is Bey. "LEVII'S JEANS" is also a cute summer song. It reminds me so much of Mariah & Migeul “#Beautiful", a cute lil Billboard bop.

- I remember when talked so much shxt about during Post Malone set at Coachella before she took the stage and I enjoyed his set. Now he featured on what I thought would've been a huge hit from this album.

Please post! I was going to post mine, but I really don't listen to have this album so it's hard for some song and obvious for others!

Well it is still impactful though

-she is the first black woman to go #1 on the Country chart

- she managed to have put the spotlight on those upcoming black country artists and gave them their first Hot 100 entry.

- she gave Linda Martell her first ever Hot 100 entry, that's huge.

Ugh.

I really don't like to moan, especially because a) the album is great, b) we don't know what could be around the corner, and c) it's just tiresome...

But seeming ball-drops like this are so annoying. For the simple fact that it's unneccessary.

I don't even care for the Miley collab like that, but on paper it makes total sense for Columbia to go all-out making it a thing as both ladies are on the label. It's a circular win. And an easy one at that.

It's not lost on me that it has already cost them $$$$ to push it as the focus track upon the album's launch, so why not ride it til the wheels fall off rather than quite literally leaving it FOR the wheels to fall off.

The only angle that would make sense is if there's a "single version" of one of the existing songs that's about to be serviced. Call me delulu, but like a "Bodyguard ft x artist". Beyond that, there's no logical reason to seemingly abandon a track they've already pumped $$$$ into.

I'm a huge advocate for Bey's regal positioning and approach to promo NOT needing to be like the Taylor's and other cookie-cutter girls. I actively like that she "put in the work" in the first half of her career to reach a time like this when she can SOMEWHAT sit back and let the magic happen. There's an effortless "cool" attached to not being "seen" to chase commercial moments too.

THAT SAID...

It's so annoying to see something as simple as working a track at radio + streaming messed up when it literally requires nothing from Bey herself. It's objectively silly, doesn't benefit her regality in any way, and arguably makes it harder for her the next time she actually does want to "play the game". Automated success comes from feeding the machine regularly. Coming off the success of Texas, the Miley song doing well helps the next thing which helps the next thing. I don't get what they don't get about this.

On a non-moany note, do we still think a "live" something is on the cards?

April is speeding ahead, making for an even more limited time to announce a tour (for example).

We know she's a stadium-only girl and that mandates a summer run.

In short, it feels like she'd be cutting it a bit fine unless there's an announcement semi-imminently.

I am CACKLING… and upset that Bey has gone radio silent since releasing her BIGGEST album in nearly a decade!! :biblionny:
