Jay and Bey had took a huge misstep with Tidal. They knew streaming was the way forward and thought they could be ahead of the curve capitalizing on it. They thought people cared about HiFi music when everyone just had cheap Apple wired earphones that came with the box. They thought just because you create an Avengers type collab of investors, everybody's fanbase would tune in. (Bey said that meeting was egoless :priceless:). They thought the general public cared about how much money artists were paid and decided to charge $20/mo compared to Spotify's free or $5/mo student plans. If that were the case, Spotify wouldn't have been on top since the royalties they pay artists are absolutely abysmal. :deadbanana:I think they just stuck to their grit and decided to be petty. I will say Tidal was ahead of its time, the philosophy of it isn't as appreciated because AM/Spotify are now copying it due to competition.

Renaissance is a completely reversal and I'm excited to see what she has planned.

Took the leap but forgot to take their life vests. Especially Bey. Whew.

It's over. Thank God. :jonnycat:

I don't think people in here understand how out of touch they are when it comes to Internet media nowadays. Everything is fast paced, everything is replaceable. Media formats are getting shortened to 15 second videos on TikTok, people have shortened their attention spans. Music is less than 3 minutes now and they come and go. Longevity is very hard to achieve and you have to play the game for that. Look how fast the newer it girls/boys eras went (with the exception of a minority) compared to 5 years ago. Ariana, Adele, The Weeknd, Billie, etc, just came and went, eras don't pan out over two years anymore. Navigating through the industry is harder than ever with the oversaturated media consumption and there really is no sense of "superstars" anymore.

Bey took a massive 6 year break with her solo catalogue while all of this was happening. We could compare her to Rihanna, both of them have not released an album in the same time frame. But what's the difference is Rihanna had all of the exposure with Fenty doing Youtube interviews, events, being in public, etc. She was generally more connected to her audience than Bey and absolutely knew her market. Bey has been very conservative and the way her team handled eras was lackluster doing primarily award shows, calculated PR articles, and magazine interviews to promote. :rip: She missed Carpool Karaoke, Ellen, very popular podcasts at their peak, newer media, while all of this was happening.

The audience is searching for a relatable figure and that is preferable over an untouchable Goddess. It's the reason why selfie-like Beyonce Instagram posts have more engagement/likes than her posing in front of a blank wall just so she could play the paparazzi. Anyways, I don't think Bey cares though. She's always been music not the bling and she will be rewarded for it in retrospective. If she did, she would have played the game. Just my observation and two cents, I'm really into marketing. :priceless:

I think B doesn't need to do all that. She doesn't have to interact with stans on social media or to be relatable, she has never been like that and she should not start. No Carpool or whatever. Tbh I would hate that.

If she had just cared to put her mic on and do impromptu live renditions of her songs on IG. Or put a BTS of her in studio recording 1+1. If on Twitter and IG, she shared her work or passion for a project. If she would on her Twitter put BTS of how she came up with songs, the process etc...it would go a long way.

The problem is that on social media, Beyoncé is not a musician. You will find more about Ivy Park and her dates' outfits on IG than her music. People say it's a strategy but it's one I don't get.

But tbh she wouldn't even need to do anything if she just shared her music everywhere, always : Spotify, YTB, AM, Twitter, IG etc. She would not even need to put notes or captions, nothing if the music is everywhere.

But we are slowly getting there, this time we had a small caption : "BMS is out now." :celestial:

why are they so obsessed. like is the hive vs navy bs gonna start back up riri has been retired for like 5 years let it go :jonny2:

I don’t think it was just TIDAL because she held her performances and FWT tour. I just think she wanted an elusiveness around Lemonade which may pay off later. It will become a bigger cult figure in music. The elusiveness almost made it more legendary.

Ch... It's just a top 5.

But yes, high single peaks/hits are the only thing B didn't achieve with her last era so I somehow understand their dedication. :toofunny2:

I think some also created a "she's over" narrative from TG and EIL flopping and it hurts to let that go.

I especially want a behind the scenes of her recording like how Ariana posted her sessions on Insta/Youtube. Just so everyone can see the process and how hard she works. Literally no one in the newer gen is stacking/arranging hundreds of vocals like she does and is that creative.

Also people really do be questioning her vocals prob bc she gatekeeps her work by removing them off Internet. People really forgot this is the woman who sang Listen/Love on Top, as if her resonance didn't completely mute Jennifer Hudson's screaming at the Oscars the second she got on that stagelift. I remember that grin she had. :priceless: I really do be seething over the newer generation who say she can't sing and it's always the newer generation saying this. I see it all the time on TikTok. All of this because she fits the generalized popstar mold, and does choreography. At least they recognize her as one of the greatest performers? But I will always value her underrated vocal technique. Older folks remember how extra Bey used to be with vocals and got to experience it pre-Internet. I just guess the average person isn't going to go the extra mile and search up her tour performances where the real highlights are. They will only check up established channels like BBC Radio Live Lounge, Tiny Desk, etc. This is why I want at least an AOL session type performance minus all of the lights and mirrors. Stripped down, just her and the mamas.

The thing is...we are focused on Beyoncé. Any talk about T*ylor has nothing to do with wanting to discuss her or dissect her or even shade her. She (a clear marker of acclaim and commercial success) has been cited as a way to contrast the use and result of similar strategies in an effort to theorize on the positive or negative results for Beyoncé.

she wasn’t that “elusive” during lemonade

she performed at pretty much every major award show and the super bowl and released a whole movie on hbo during that era before going on a massive stadium tour :rip: like sure she wasn’t tweeting or whatever but she had a massive media presence without that

plus even if the songs didn’t have the best peaks because of how they were released they were still big hits, at least here in the us anyways. that whole summer everyone was playing formation/sorry/hold up. but i’m also in ny so maybe my perspective on that is different :deadbanana:

Looking at one post on those Twitter comments. Someone suggested to listen to it from the Playlist TTH so it can remain there, they might have a point.

I think her elusiveness then was less due to evasiveness and more on her reliance on surprise and the unexpected:

  • surprise releasing Formation
  • announcing she was performing at the Super Bowl with short notice
  • surprise releasing Lemonade (as we didn't know for sure it was an album, just an HBO event)
  • surprise performing at the BET Awards
  • doing an entire 16-minute medley at the VMAs (rather unexpected that it was going to be THAT)
  • surprise performing at the CMAs

she was well placed, but elusive becuase you could never/rarely expect it or know beforehand and so her presence had a bit of an awe-factor, especially given the quality of Lemonade's promo performances which are all pretty perfect.

She doesn't need to do what the other girls do. BUT she had a great thing going where she used to communicate pretty effectively through her posts. The 2013-2017 era. Hive was strong. We had a fair bit of her day to day, the type of hotels they would stay at (and her messy room). The mundane was perfectly curratted. And genuinely fun moments. And the Halloween costumes were an event!

She also debunked the accusation that she doesn't use her page during elevatorgate. She made it clear who she didn't have a problem with by posting their pictures. And she used to write notes. She also shared some Lemonade sounding lyrics before we knew what was coming.

Something happened. She retreated and it coincides with the twins being born. I think Bey will share more as the era continues.

The past 3 years of that girl’s career has really been taking Bey’s playbook and doing it better :rip: From the surprise releases to the private life.

Can’t hate the player chile…

She saw it done well and used that, same as Bey did with Madonna/Janet and what to do to avoid being labeled as "nasty" by the media.

The girls have always benefitted from one another.

yeah i see what you mean

i would say she stopped really engaging with EIL and The Gift which is where she felt more disconnected to me though

EIL being a random drop like halfway through their joint tour and The Gift also just randomly being announced on IG after the official Lion King soundtrack had already been released and promoted with Spirit :rip: and then that documentary like months later and BIK a whole year later :deadbanana:

i’m really hoping she’s more present for this era :deadbanana:

There was nothing wrong with Lemonade as far as the singles and performances. It's her failure to sustain the era due to the platform she chose to release on and how she follower up.

We can't ignore that Beyonces album is the only major release not charting from that 2015-2017 era. And it was one of the highest selling. Clearly not a quality issue. But an obvious disconnect regarding what she wanted to say with the album and thinking it could be fixed by curating this infallible couple after he obviously embarassed and hurt her. She should have played that different.

But here we are with Renaissance. She knows all this obviously and wants to correct course.

Spotify is a platform where most people listen to music that is suggested to them through playlists, adds and banners. The rest goes on Spotify to check for a song they've heard on radio, seen in a movie, heard in a club or seen online (Tik Tok, YouTube, Twitter, IG).

When they listen to a couple songs that they like from the same artist, they go on said artist page and follow. This does 2 things : the algorithm will always present new songs AND old songs from artists they like and he will be directly inform of every new releases from said artist. But the most important is that the person will always alone go back to the artist and songs he likes and knows. Like Coca-Cola.

Spotify will of course favor new songs in their most popular play lists and old ones that were hits or are classics. But with no new hits, that's less songs in the play lists, that's less fans that you create.

Now imagine an artist like Beyoncé, Lemonade was talked about in the media, there were parodies etc so some people will go check for Hold Up, they can't find it and then they'll check for Formation and they won't find it. Sorry they don't find. OK, they'll just move on, they won't add Bey's profile and they will just assume one should not check for that artist.

Another thing to consider is that it's a loop : one person sees Hold Up on TV, goes to check it on Spotify, wow it's so good, requests in on radio, listens to it with his friends, the friends and radio listeners go on Spotify do the same etc. That's how 1B streams happen. And when that happens, for every person that played Hold Up a lot, the algorithm will suggest Crazy In Love, SL, Irreplaceable, LOT thus retroactively making said old hits even bigger and creating a familiarity with that artist (what we call fans).

Beyoncé missed all that. And you can see it when you look at how Lemonade is performing compared to 4. There are weeks 4 has the double of Lemonade's streams and that makes no sense. That's also why IASF is always her most streamed album. Because there's a stronger familiarity with those albums, even if Hold Up comes in a Playlists, most users are likely to skip it because they don't know it or it's not familiar to them.

I hope that wasn't too long and made sense.

Yes...thank you. This helps me to understand it better...how the effects of the algorithm affect both the old & new stuff to the casual listener.

The visuals are going to be top tier for this :gaycat5:

I trust her so entirely (especially doing house/dance music) but I’m itching to learn more, like the tracklist and to see the cover.

2 hours ago, Beyle Street said:

Yep, lack of new music for years on end will affect you heavily. She used to be one of the top dogs of Spotify before the Lemonade era and then they tumbled when nothing was added on there. EIL is counted under The Carters so that just leaves Homecoming (nobody is actively streaming live albums daily) and The Gift, an afrobeat soundtrack that the GP didn't click with/doesn't know about. It will just take time for her to get her audience back on there.

And she will. The album needs to have hits and it’ll be like she never left. Look at Gaga, she had very lacklustre streaming stats before her Super Bowl performance and A Star Is Born and she was able to turn that around due to the films performance and popularity of the soundtrack. Beyoncé is a bigger artist and was always bigger on streaming platforms than her so if she’s able to have big singles from RENAISSANCE, they will bring people back to her profile and her back catalogue will pick up more streams. Add a tour and it’ll keep her consistent.

I’m very confident in RENAISSANCE and super confident Beyoncé will again be one of the top streaming giants. Lemonade did 115 million on Tidal first week. I can only imagine the damage it could’ve done with a wide release. But it’s all in the past now, she’ll be fine.

it was hard for her to share those personable moments only for them to be critiqued at every turn. those family pics played a part in people accusing her of flaunting wealth or having a "perfect" life.  every time she did one of those personal handwritten letters....her intelligence was mocked b/c ppl were looking for grammar mistakes. the Halloween stuff went from having a fun moment to ppl placing expectations for her to "top" every costume each year instead of just being what they were. its too much pressure...too many thinkpieces...now she can't even release a fun dance song without being critiqued to death on not working a 9-5 in real life. enough is enough.

what can she REALISTICALLY do at this stage in her career that doesnt compromise her emotional well being & mental health and won't open the door for constant misinterpretation and bad energy?

By the way, when do you think she'll announce the tour?

I can't wait!! :duca:

Let's hope she visits Asia and Brazil this time.
