I know this award is a joke but the point is, she has cemented herself in history with the likes of Whitney and Lauryn. And on top of that she won an award for a genre that completely ridiculed and ex

IDK her stats, but I do know it's coming for Beyonce's longest charting single on the Hot 100

I am a Ms. Patti stan!!

And when I saw her in concert (2008) Patti was talking about how Beyoncé called her up to get advice on singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Movies Rock, 2007) which I felt very honoured to know (unless she just says that at all her concerts lol), but also felt it was very cute and points to just how respectful and studious Beyoncé is when it comes to her legends and her work.

Also there is this clip of Beyoncé saying she wants to be like Ms. Patti:

https://youtu.be/Sv5NxDBLKHM

(not sure why the links are embedding)

And Beyoncé has sung You'll Never Walk Alone (one of my favourite songs Patti has done consistently throughout her career):

(This is not a Patti tribute though, but I'm sure Beyoncé knew of and sought advice from watching some of Patti's versions throughout the years):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxAEkWBfJCg

And there is also a back-stage interview with Patti LaBelle and Destiny's Child from the World Music Awards where they are basically all complimenting each other and sharing love... I just cannot find the video at all right now.

BUT ANWYAY I would love a Stevie-style tribute to Patti from Beyoncé:

  • The Spirit's In It (intro)
  • New Attitude
  • Somebody Loves You Baby
  • Release
  • Lady Marmalade (outro)

These were cute videos. As a patti stan does Bey have any similar vocal mannerisms? I feel like nobody ever brings up Patti when talking about vocal legends like Celine Whitney and Mariah but her voice was just as amazing

Yes she does actually!

I would say especially during the B'Day era where Beyoncé favoured high vocal exclamations and and "yelps" that were almost shrill...that is definitely a Ms. Patti signature. This differs from the kind of high notes that Mariah, Whitney or Céline do, as Patti's always has an undeniable energy and almost uncontrollable quality that is 100% B'Day imo.

I am not sure if I can find exact replica examples, but:

[I've set these clips up to start about 5 seconds before the vocal moments I'm referencing]

for example Beyoncé's "go-oh-UH!"'s in Green Light definitely have a Patti LaBelle vibe

similar to the kind she does here for example:

Furthermore, I'd say 4 exhibits a lot of this as well, especially the tea-kettle note in End of Time:

But I agree Patti is extremely underrated vocally in regards to not being mentioned alongside those other greats. I think it's because she was never quite mainstream. She had one #1 hit in Labelle and then another #1 with her Michael McDonald duet (that Dionne turned down) and I think both were just #1 for like a week. Both solo and as a group she got maybe 1-2 other Top 40 hits each ... but she's become a legend just for how talented she is, how long she's been around, her overall persona, and her many TV moments.

But to her credit she has some of the most iconic R&B songs of the 1980s I mean If Only You Knew is a masterpiece, and of course Kelly/Nelly redid her song to make Dilemma. And though New Attitude peaked just at #17, it somehow seems far more iconic than that. I think it has been used a lot in other media/commercials and such so has widened its impact and notoriety.

Patti LaBelle is the example of a legend who doesn't need stats to prove it.
