This has been part of the reason the lack of single treatment these past few years has frustrated me. Like it or not is what most people will remember about you. Janet is a forgotten icon with the younger gen. Not saying it will happen to Bey but it the media can turn and destroy a legacy.

She wasn’t absent though, music is great but this era is just ... not it.

I believe that we are in the next transition phase for what kind of artist Beyoncé wants to be and what space she wants to occupy. Not like she hasn't dropped hints galore. It is hard as a fan to go through some of it but at the end of the day it is about the art and I can't fault her on that.

 

Sigh. It's frustrating but it is what it is. Also when does Grammy voting end? Because now I feel like her strategy is the opposite, she wants the voting to happen based on the audio/music alone and nothing else. 

 

I'm still from the camp that doesn't want her to give Grammy's too much weight. I struggle to reconcile Beyoncé leveraging her artistic credibility and weight to the Grammy's. They have no real deep standing in my eyes and for ME it I don't want bey to uplift them with her credibility by showing out too much. 

 

Anyway... Back to my favorite theory... Beyoncé wants all of us to get Phd's as the Renaissance era makes us experts in coming up with theories!!! A teacher!

Replace ‘visuals’ with ‘performances’ and this is me. I used to spend HOURS watching Beyoncé performances on YouTube, and I have all of her tours on DVD (including TBE on Blu-Ray) and would have marathons where I watched all her tours back-to-back. 
 

The fact that performances have become a rarity in her career the last few years is the worst part for me as a stan tbh. Six months into a new era and not a single performance for me to obsess over? A nightmare. 
 

In hindsight, Coachella really felt like her retirement / last hurrah as a ‘traditional’ pop star and performer. Like sure, she’ll still tour maybe twice a decade to make money and maybe perform on TV once an era but Coachella felt like her final bow and everything since then has been the epilogue. At least it’s iconic and amazing and available to stream on Netflix lol.

This and the visuals just take it over the top for me.  I miss the performances.

2013 was pure misery. 2022 is comparable but I think 2013 was worse. At the end of the day having music over promo and appearances is better.

 

Although both years suck when one element is missing from the equation.

The Beyhydration of 2013 felt more intentional and orchestrated and you knew something was gestating. Also we did get the SB and NucleALLAH and that hot GQ cover. This time around we know there's ready visuals but... nothing. An album ripe for remixes and club versions but... nothing. Myriad opportunities for live or pre-recorded performances but... nothing. So the godlike disembodied voiceover at Club Renaissance over the weekend was a choice. She's parodying herself. If this era has gone to plan then it's offensively stingy for her not to provide anything other than an expensive tour one year later. If it's not intentional then it's still shocking and unexpected that her era fell apart so fast, like a plane coming apart in the sky.

Ngl, if she hadn't teased the visuals, I probably wouldn't even care that much and would've deluded myself into thinking she was pulling a Listen Without Prejudice. But knowing she's preparing some and having no clue when it drops is HELL

The few things that we get...ya'll keep complaining over. So what is it really about? many of you have said that you wanted to hear more about the album process & she shares an exclusive clip of her actually going a little in depth about the creative process and now it's not satisfying b/c she didn't say it in the right vocal tone. like wtf? if its gonna be this way...then that's EXACTLY why Beyonce should keep doing what is authentic to her. 

 

many of the Hive don't view Beyonce as a person...you want a personalized popgirl puppet that's supposed to look, act, and do things in the way you want it. And Beyonce refuses to give that...what you see is all you're going to get with her. when it gets the point where information can't be received b/c she's not using the right voice inflections...then you know a wise choice was made.

2013 was definitely different, I can't say whether it was worse or better, just different. 

I don't prefer one exactly although if I had to choose I would heavily lean towards having music. 

An era is complete when you have all three components.

Not defending our late and delayed Queen, but you sure this isn't retro-fitting? 2013 gave a lot of "WTF is going on" teas. And I don't think in a good way.

[Context: Coming off so-so era commercially with 4. A lot to prove, but celebrity status intact. An air of "comeback" and post-baby hype]
 

Inauguration Drama: lipsync discourse / bad press with people bizarrely questioning if sis could even sing. She clapped back with acapella at SB press conference. End of that.
 

Super Bowl: slayed, but NO new music. Fans scratching their heads. 

 

Grown Woman Drops in Pepsi Ad: fans excited, but no formal release. None of her team would confirm if it was "the" single or not. Whole thing seemed confusing internally and externally.

 

Standing On The Sun for H&M: See above.

 

Bow Down Drops on Soundcloud:  very random and had even fans dragging the new Bey sound. Around the time, she awkwardly jumped on socials as "BaddieBey" AFTER Rihanna's BadGyalRih was a thing. An air of "is she out of touch" runs rampant.

 

Mrs Carter Tour Announced  / Starts: Yay! But still no new music. Giving Greatest Hits Tour tea. Fans love it, but confused AF. 

 

Misc 2013: she spotted shooting videos publicly and pap shots. XO, Jealous, etc. Exciting to some, hella confusing to others. 

 

Dec 2013: Changed the game with the digital drop.

 

IMO, I do not for a single second believe everything pre self-titled was planned ahead of time. The start of 2013 really gave "look, we just trying to figure it out". It took time, they got the sound, image, and roll-out right and we know how the rest of the story went. 

 

In comparison, I (as a fan of Beyonce the artist and the brand) would not want her out her litmus testing her output + direction/s in front of us all again. Serve it when it's perfected.

 

2022 has definitely had its highs and lows with her antics, but not sure it's any worse (or better) than what 2013 gave.

yeah 2013 was not an air of expectation....Hive was complaining just as loudly back then too. no one understood not using Superbowl or the documentary to push new music & not releasing Grown Woman & Standing on the Sun to radio/itunes yet using them for those commercial campaigns. many fans were also upset when the Mrs Carter setlist had no new songs.

 

the narrative from haters all year was that she was dragging her feet & scared to release following 4's underperformance.

 

people look back the era fondly only b/c it was a success but the surprise release strategy was no guaranteed recipe for success & was really the first sign of ambivalence that would follow for the next 10 years.

but the behydration wasn't intetional. she was planning on debuting blow at the super bowl, and grown woman and sots were extremely close to be released.

 

i believe her old creative director said the visual album idea took shape around june 2013, well after the tour began 

Random but I just watched TBE for the first time in a while and was scalped so hard. It's difficult to explain just how brilliant of an entertainer she is. She was already outperforming legends at only 25 years old. She was so much more advanced than her peers on every level in terms of talent, stage presence, understanding of music, catalogue, sense of self etc. She's truly in a league of her own 

 

When you watch her old performances, it makes a lot of sense that's she's ready to slow down now, especially physically. She spent years literally giving her all on stage, and that has to take a toll after a while

The B'day era performances made me a stan, they were absolutely next level SLAYAGE.

 

Her confidence, her vocals, her charisma, her energy, the fire in her eyes!!!

 

I still remember the first time i watched TBE i had chills all the way through... Nobody is touching her in that department!

I think people are looking at 2013 with rose tinted glasses, it was called the Beyhydration for a reason. Being present only becomes a form of trolling when you turn up just to promote your diet or you tease a song you will never release 

But the take away is that what we experienced in Summer of 2013 is very different from what followed in December and the months to follow. This era is going to be inherently longer than past. ST/Lemonade had tours which began 2-3months after the albums launched, this tour will begin 1 year after Rennie. Just saying plenty of time for the era to shift and turn perception around. 

after all i still can’t believe she never released Standing on the Sun (not the Mr. Vegas remix) She could’ve even dropped it as a cute lil single on streaming and that’s it.
