Sia has been releasing songs with every artist for the past 10 years. She has a lot of those hits in lots of playlists and most of her older hits get great numbers. Most of those Sia hits happened during her 30s. Only cheap thrills didn't.

Men don't stream female artists and women barely stream female artists, so... 

It does hence barely 1 or 2 old people get hits and they do because it's either a holiday classic ala AIWFCIY or they're attached to a current hitmaker ie Elton with Dua (And even then it's still a rarety)

Yes ageism exists with streaming. Older acts don't have as much platforms to promote their music. Radio alone ignores them

Mariah isn't really a good example to prove ageism doesn't exist, since she's a great example of how it DOES exist. I mean her last album, Caution, debuted at #5 and 77% of her first week says were pure album sales, leaving only 8,000 album-equivalent units.

 

And this was just a few months before Ariana's Thank U, Next album debuted at #1 with 240,000 album equivalent units. That's about 30x more than Mariah did in album-equivalent units (which we know is the units that include streaming).

 

I mention Ariana's album because they are actually quite similar. Mariah's is a laidback R&B/hip-hop album that is very much the same tone and texture as Thank U, Next. So, it's not as if Mariah's album just didn't have a trendy or popular sound. It was actually very current and is a great album. People were just not checking for her, mainly, I think, because of her age.

Yes, ageism unfortunately exists on all fronts for female artists. But it's more of a perception thing (how old you look/present & how long you've been in the spotlight) than a concrete age.

Of course it does. Not only streaming but radio too. There's a reason why pop girls gets bigger on pure sales and smaller on streaming with time; they rely on their loyal fanbases to buy their stuff and the general public doesn't think it's "cool" to check on them - especially Gen Z, so they don't stream or support.

 

 

Ageism with artists putting out new material without attaching trendy artist with the song? Yes it exists!

That's true, unfortunately. Female artists' fanbases consist of mostly other women, gay men and a few curious/progressive straight men.

But this also means that a superusuccessful female artist like Adele or Taylor is popular with almost everyone except straight men.

Absolutely but I think it effects female artists more.

That’s not true, I have straight male friends who do listen to Adele and Taylor.. But that’s about it.
