With the Rihanna rate finished, can I get your approval to facilitate the Ariana Grande Discography Rate?

The way I'll probably do this just because I'm curious to see if she can beat Rihanna's record of 78 sub-average scores on my ballot.

  • This is ******* me up       Yeah and it was specifically in the context of "albums that I can't believe I sat myself through but rates were still fun!"

These "different albums from different artists" rates are stupid honestly. I'm not going to listen to Liberation just to rate Kylie, Mariah or Ariana's albums. I can imagine participants sabotaging that one artist they don't like. I would much more preferred separate discography rates for each lady.

Edited by AdrianNicki

Trolling ballots in rates with albums from different artists are usually easy to spot and get thrown out most of the time.

A neverending parade of discography rates is boring. :sorry:

I don't see the problem with discography rates honestly. They seem to get way more interest and participants, and people actually enjoy following along for reveals.

especially when the albums that get grouped together seem relatively random a lot of the time.

Discography rates are fun but at some point you guys are gonna run out of artists to run them for :rip: give the multi artist rates a try too.

Like, some people on here are already ranking people's albums day in, day out in their bases, why do we need yet another rate for that... :rip:

Must suck to lack any kind of curiosity.

I think there just needs to be a bit more thought put into what albums are lumped together, rather than just the fact they all came out into the same year

there needs to be a little bit of cohesion within each rate

My thoughts - why wouldn't one want to listen to something new? If you like/love three artists and their albums, and there's one other, what's the harm? You might find something you like there? And, even if you don't, you don't have to give 0-3 scores for everything. We love the inclusivity of discography rates, but they can also be quite exclusive - for some, multi-artist rates are easier and more rewarding than taking weeks-months diving through an artist. Also, true diversity of opinions really inhibits stan culture.

There's room for everyone, let's say that!

But, yes, @right where you left me and @Solaria - you can start your rates as soon as the Gaga and Florence rates, respectively, are over!

LETSGOOO

I love the deep dive that a discography rate offers, but it can pretty quickly just turn into a predictable sabotage-fest of "gave it a 0 just cus lol" and girls trying to one-up each other to get the most laugh reacts. And I get it! Most of these people hanging out in the main girl rates are just there for a kii, me too at times. I love to laugh and be unserious too! But I like engaging in music on a deeper level and having my perspective challenged. The academic in me wants to talk about the merit of songs, even the bad ones.

Yay thank you! I think the Florence rate is over. Did you mean the Carly Rae Jepsen rate?

As for the versus rates... different strokes. Some people don't like the year-groupings? Fair enough. I like them. I like hearing what the girls were doing around the same time, since they were all coexisting on the charts together. Who was influenced by what? Who was staying atop the trends and who was getting left behind? Who's campaign picked the right singles and who shat the bed? Stuff like that.

I think there is an art of picking the right vibe though. Like, I don't think they necessarily have be the exact same calendar year to be a group. Similarly, not every album in the same year is fit to compete.

I use an OldTRL rate as an example: Music vs All For You vs Fever. 2000/2001/2002, reaching across three years there, but all in the same sort of canon: old ladies in their Y2K commercial resurgence. Could have included Glitter and Just Whitney too, but it would've shifted the vibe of the rate to something else.

Discography rates have grown stale for me because even if someone releases one or two new albums since the last go around, it always seems like the same song wins or the results don't really change

I don't know, personally there's only so many times "Into You" or "Style" or whatever can win a rate before it gets too boring to pretend to care

A bunch of albums by different artists that offers at least the illusion of unpredictability, however? Love it!

It's not really about the winner for me, I like discography rates because I like seeing tastes change over time and love reading people really dig into the music. Like, in theory at least. A discog rate should be fans coming together to actually take a critical look at the music, but it still ends up as messy and sabotage heavy as the other ones so idk. I love burying myself in an artist's music and sharing my thoughts, it's my favourite way to consume music. I just don't get that a lot from some of these blockbuster rates.

And I'm aware I'm a niche audience! I'm just sharing!

I will say, the J-pop rates I've ran have been great at this. Even the shady 1's and 2's usually have a comment attached to help understand the thought process there, or the user will come by and share what they don't like about a song. The 日本人歌姫 are the tea

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Don't get me wrong. I get the concept behind those multi artist rates. Encouraging people to listen to someone new is a lovely idea and a great way to promote some less known and underrated artists. But this concept is only good on paper imo. I would argue they are actually more exclusive than discography rates. Quick skim through some of the threads and you see people complaining certain album is included or people trying to listen to sb and really struggling.

But maybe I gave it a try and truly think all songs by artist XYZ deserve a score 2 or below? I bet my ballot would be instantly rejected cuz how would I prove I'm not doing this to sabotage? And even if it got approved I would feel like I'm ruining the game for others. I would only participate in such rate If I liked all artists included and that's really hard to do and I bet I'm not the only one feeling this way.

Are discog rates predictable? A little... But hit songs were hits for a reason so even though I would like to see something unexpected win, I can see why songs like Style win. Personally, what happens in between is much more interesting than the winner.

But that's just my take. I don't see why we can't have both. I'm glad Ari and Dua ones are approved! I cannot wait! I may check some of the multi artist ones in the future if they feel right for me.

Just based on my own experience, participating-wise, I don't think I've ever actually encountered an album in a rate where I ended up giving everything on it a 2 or below, and I've sat through some real tedious and overall terrible albums, but only at the expensive of maybe 30-40 or so minutes of my time.

Hosting-wise, if I'm unsure whether a ballot is trolling or not, it's also kind of easy to tell based on what kind of poster the person is and what the scores look like in relation to the rest of their ballot. All 2s for one album and all 10s for one or two of the other albums will raise eyebrows, even if the user may seem sincere with it, but all 1s-4s for one album and the rest of the albums sitting in the 6-7 or so average range? I don't know. That feels more plausible to me, and I've hosted rates where I'm pretty that's actually happened. Maybe others disagree though, and maybe others have actually taken part in rates where an album got all 0s and 1s from them. :deadbanana:

I can understand the in between stuff being more interesting for sure, but at least for me, if there's only one new album or so from the artist and all the same people as last time are taking part it feels like there's only so much that can be said that wasn't already said the last time, and just for the inevitable outcome of whichever single won last time winning again. I don't know, I don't take part in discography rates much at all anymore so maybe I'm completely wrong here and there's actually been some unpredictable results in some of them. :deadbanana: Maybe some discography rates would just benefit from a bigger gap between redos? I don't know.

100% we should have both! Again, it may just be I keep hopping in here at the wrong times but it feels like I see people only wanting discography rates after every new album from an artist and like... Like Eevee said, you're probably going to run out of artists pretty quickly if you keep just doing those, and the cycle will just repeat. :deadbanana:

Btw, didn't mean to single you out and say you specifically lack any kind of curiosity, hope it didn't seem that way! It was more of a general thing that you definitely see when you host multi-artist rates sometimes - people hop in just to reply "I would love to do this but such and such album I've never actually heard in full is here and I refuse to listen to it!" Like... OK? That sucks. It is here though, so... :suburban:

Though I don't know why I came in here mad as hell at 8am. :suburban:

By the way.

Only if we can somehow throw in Midnight Lounge too so the rate can have a true masterpiece :suburban:

Not too much now. :suburban:

I kinda miss hosting rates. I used to have a lot of fun. I know I asked to rate a Nellegend Godtado rate a few months but then got lazy. but i need a hobby for july since i have most of the month free (only exciting things happening is the kylie concert in lisbon and a friends bday)

which makes me wonder if I could maybe host a sexy summer album rate idk something like Light Years x B'day x Oral Fixation x Radical Optimism x Solar Power x Endless Summer Vacation x Come Away With Me

All kinds of rates are essential to our base ecosystem, we'll take anything to at least get our members to bicker about music instead of whatever other nonsense!

Anything less than a 10 average is considered a troll ballot :suburban:

Maybe I'm just a little bitter about discography rates because most of my faves are dead/haven't released an album this side of like... Hurricane Katrina

Must be nice to have new music to talk about
