I'd love a second go at Ladies of Country since my attempt a decade ago did not pan out! But I'd really love to do Dolly essentials first. Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt are two other big names who probably ought to show up somewhere. Do they go in the Carly, Carole, Joni, Stevie, etc set?

 

 

On a completely different front, I've been thinking it could be interesting to do a rate with old country / folk albums by black women. Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut, Tina Turner's solo debut, Linda Martell's album. I'm sure we could find one or two more to include.

At certain point I wonder if it's just better to have some designated "Music Study Group" thread where an "expert" introduces a selection of songs based on a subject they are passionate about for a bi-weekly/monthly discussion, where each song they've presented could also be rated by each person partaking in the study group discussion. 

 

Rates are great entertainment, but they are not the best platform for genuine music discussion or smaller artists/older artists that aren't part of the current pop culture and zeitgeist (in this forum or in the real world). Plus it's a pretty big time investment in general.

people really concentrate on blue and i don't think it does her any favours for newcomers? it's like a relic of that era of rock critic consensus where some album would be "the one" and everything else gets ignored but it esp does joni a disservice cos she's still in her slightly cringe hippie phase, not prim and sanctimonious like on ladies of the canyon but also lacking all the range and wisdom she picks up by the mid 70s classics

 

i mean, i like cute music, it's why i like half my pop girls (i fear i must admit to being a lover stan here) but i can still wince a bit at some of blue after so many years, tho river, blue the song, the last time i saw richard and a case of you are absolutely solid all timers

i'd do this for some of the really old 60s/70s acts if people were interested but it's important that there's an audience for it, you can spend forever preparing stuff about, say, yr 10 fave beatles tunes or whatever and then three people turn up and two of them are calling you grandma cos it's not addison rae

I'm just throwing out dumb ideas atp lmao, but I think such a thread would genuinely be about wanting to broaden ones horizon regarding music, be it 60s surf rock, Japanese enka divas, Tina Turner pre-Private Dancer or Merzbow's greatest hits, rather than discuss the same artists, albums and genres that are already being discussed on ATRL day in day out. And if there are only 3 people interested... well honestly there are some music I listen to that I would be happy to discuss with even three other people. Like genuinely sometimes less than a 1000 monthly listeners on Spotify type of ****.

The concept of Blue and Lover being mentioned in the same paragraph, in a way that makes it seem like Blue is being insulted and Lover is being… praised.

Hm, bringing back the old Essentials concept of all the album tracks? Not opposed to it but I fear it's appeal is limited to only artists that already draw a crowd: pop girls, pop mothers, indie faves.

 

Some of these girls are just not ATRL-friendly enough (Faye, Springsteen), or have too many damn songs (Prince). I think another category is warranted. Something between a singles rate and an essentials rate. We can call it something else. What did @conatus call her Beatles idea? Classics? Maybe that.

I think if yr going to deal with these big legacy artists you probably need something like this, throwing them into a mixed rate with half a dozen songs feels like a bit of an insult but, esp for the 60s artists, they were churning out two albums a year packed with filler half the time and no one wants to listen to all those mid post peak albums either
