Not to plug my old rate once again, but the Ladies of Jazz rate playlist and the honourable mentions playlist are (in my opinion) a solid place to start in terms of the big classic female voices! Feel free to put them on shuffle and see where they take you, and then if you want more recommendations from there based on what you did and didn't like, we'd be happy to help.

Let us know if you'd rather get into some instrumental jazz though, or something modern perhaps!

ooh, this is a great base/thread. i'm glad to see we are including males for once. i've been digging thru the crates lately, listening to some of my dad's old jazz records and it's been such an experience.

here's an album i found about two months ago at a thrift store. not sure if anyone's mentioned her, but it is rather lovely.

Yeah, I definitely see someone like Laufey becoming the darling here considering how contested her status as a "jazz" singer is and how she's already won two Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album Grammys.

I agree it'll also be a site for deathbed noms for the other older divas put out to pasture.

For example, I could maybe see the Dionne/John Legend collab getting a nom here if it's eligible.

Making sure I don't take living in a Jazz-rich city for granted and seeing as many live shows as I can this summer, especially since they get that all that institutional backing I feel like very few other genres have maintained as proper a respect for live musicianship while always being affordable And few other genres sound as good live with a real ensemble

The NYC free concert series started off with Ledisi's Dinah tribute which I told myself I wouldn't wanna miss for anything but I skipped it to watch NBA history...but we still have lots of things lined up like Charlie Parker tributes, a showing of the Miles Davis documentary with a live orchestra accompaniment, and the Sun Ra Arkestra
