The album was really one of the best pop albums of the year with very good melodies and expensive production. Obviously the album flopped because the singles did, but why did the singles flop?

I Love Your Girl

Mabel is boring and lacks any kind of unique selling point. Don't Call Me Up was a massively payola'd hit and she was just coasting on its success afterwards. She started out with a slightly interesting R&B sound but threw it all away to become a generic pop star. People forgot about her between her first and second albums because there was nothing worth waiting around for. The rebrand with the blonde wig wasn't exactly going to get the masses flocking, especially since she can't really sing or dance.

didn't listen to this whole album so idk but popping in to say Love Your Girl is one of the best pop songs of the decade and should've gotten its flowers

Idk but Definition is a ******* BOP

If Let Them Know was an indicator about the album sound, then there were no chances (love the song, it's a bop, but GP are not here for this kind of sound)

I still spin Shy and Animal on occasion!

The album is indeed great. I hate Polydor just pushed this Future Nostalgia from temu aesthetic on her

being a pop girl and making dance music isn't enough.

People just didn't want to have fun when it was released. I Love Your Girl released as a single would have changed her career trajectory.

She tried too much have her Future Nostalgia moment but without the range to pull it off

It lacked budget for music videos and the whole era image. But the album is so fun, I absolutely adore it

To be fair, Mabel low key alienated her fans she had initially made with her R&B sound by going fully dance-pop (and she's got some bops), if she had continued with her initial sound I think things might be different now

I only ever listen to it for the bridge lol but was surprised at how bad it bombed...like it's clearly a European smash material

Pop stars need a gimmick or a signature sound to sell, she doesn't have either.

I love this album so much.

Unfortunately, she's lost me as a fan after that album.

I want pop from her, not R&B.

And I think that lack of consistency has destroyed both of her pop and R&B fanbases, which is similar to what happened to Doja this era by doing an 80s-inspired record, which I actually think is her best album to date. But I also think Witness is one of Katy's best albums, so maybe I have exotic taste that's not for the masses lmao.
