I really hope I enjoy the album more on the second listen. I wasn't really connecting with anything the first time through.

Gorgeous is absolutely fabulous, in a just world it would be a big fat hit

 

the rest of this album …. idk … i like a lot of it but i can't see myself being like "oh i should listen to Couples Therapy" or Take Me Dancing or Cards .. it's a lot of samesy samesy

 

but the back half of the album does pick up and i'll give her credit for that. Jealous Type, Gorgeous, Stranger, Silly Fun, and One More Time are the standouts for me here. there's some other cute songs peppered in but overall i'm underwhelmed i can't lie

Scarlet never grew on me  don't get me wrong i think this is a generally well produced album and to be fair more than half the songs i'd consider between decent to good/great but .. idk i can't describe it i really feel like she could have really leaned in and made this album even better

 

this is also one instance where, whereas i generally prefer Doja as a rapper over a pop artist, going off the vibe of this album i feel like id almost prefer there to be pretty much no rapping and her just go all in on pop/singing. the raps here feel like they're tacked on / an afterthought or that she has to remind people that she also raps.

You know what it is? A lot of these songs don't have strong hooks imo, so I'm not getting pulled in. I'll just have to revisit.

 

The vocals, production, sound, concept and execution are great tho!
