Both Lady Gaga and Beyoncé faced criticism for opportunistically resurrecting deceased family members in the marketing of their respective albums, Joanne and Renaissance. Joanne was arguably used to feign authenticity and expand Lady Gaga's target demographic by appealing to hot AC and conservative audiences after the disastrous ARTPOP era. Johnny was a conduit through which Beyoncé constructed a personal narrative tying her to the Ballroom scene, which heavily inspired Renaissance. Both popstars faced skepticism for their sincerity. The elusive Johnny was mentioned just a handful of times prior to the heavy marketing of him in Renaissance. Shortly after the release of Renaissance, Beyoncé was seen dining with MAGA fascist, Jared Kushner, at an event hosted by Jay-Z, calling into question the sincerity of Renaissance as a whole and seemingly reducing the significance of Johnny's story to a narrative prop. One could argue that Lady Gaga's use of Joanne as a prop was more blatant. In her Five Foot Two documentary, Gaga laments Joanne's death on camera. The audience feels palpable discomfort from Joanne's own mother in response to the exploitation, who responds "it's been 40 years..." and "don't get to maudlin' over this." Discuss!
