My brilliant friend by Elena Ferrante   right now I'm reading a book about Palestine

read all works except for the Ezio trilogy and lost crusade. quite interesting, i think it's gonna work even better if you unfamiliar with the franchise :giraffe:

Assassin’s Creed by Oliver Bowden 10 Books Collection Set - Fiction - Paperback

I loved LA Confidential (the movie is good too), The Black Dahlia and White Jazz. I just started American Tabloid, it's historical fiction about the JFK assassination.

My top recommendations are:

The Song of Achilles

Atonement

The Last of the Wine

We Are The Ants

The House in the Cerulean Sea

Passing

The Prettiest Star

The Hate U Give

Interested in recommendations for good gay fiction. I'm tired of my searches always being clogged with cozy slop, mediocre YA fantasy slop, high school slop, or the opposite extreme of literature about aids!hatecrimes!trauma!

I'm super into horror, so I mostly read horror novels tbh

But if you'd like any recs from that genre I can oblige !

i'm always looking for new horror recs. i'm almost finished "the strain" by guilherme del toro and while it kept my attention, it reads like a teenage book series

i love older horror like burnt offerings, the haunting of hill house, etc

The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu if you're into mindf*cks. Blew me away.

Foe by Iain Reid more subtle sci-fi

The Maid series -  especially for the neurodiverse girls :heart2:

Both of Arundhati Roy's novels

Both of Yaa Gyasi's novels

Nine Perfect Strangers

Octavia E. Butler's masterpieces (Kindred, Parable of the… novels)

The Bee Sting

To Paradise

The Death of Vivek Oji

The 22 Murders of Madison May

The Bandit Queens

Sooo I would totally recommend Clive barker (hellraiser film writer)

He has such a poetic way of writing horror that makes the grotesque sound beautiful. His Books of blood series, are a good starting point because it's all short (well done though) stories

But also the hellbound heart by him (which hellraiser is based on) is a short novella that is honestly fantastic.

As far as more modern horror, I'd recommend penpal by dathan Auerbach. Don't be put off by the fact it technically started as a Reddit series, it's very creepy and a fun read.

I'm really into this Scottish writer (Scottish here hihi) called David sodergren, he does horror, and I would recommended Maggie's grave as a starting point of his.

I also looooove extreme horror such as splatterpunk and stuff but I feel like those are quite niche.

Honestly this is all off the top of my head but I'll look at my Goodreads later and give you more haha

i've been reading a bunch of Japanese books lately to improve my Japanese. these are some that have English translations:

Convenience Store Woman and Earthlings - Sayaka Murata

The Woman in the Purple Skirt - Natsuko Imamura

There's No Such Thing As An Easy Job - Kikuko Tsumura

Idol Burning - Rin Usami

I'm currently reading Sex and The City so the original Candace Bushnell columns. It's absolutely hilarious and also quite disgusting. It really shows somewhat of a depraved side of the big city lifestyle; I was actually so surprised by this. She writes very satirically and obviously does major criticism towards the narcissist sex-obsessed and objectified zeitgeist of late 80/early 90s NY and it's shocking that it all seems to be coming back again in todays age of social media and onlyfans

I highly recommend it to anyone who likes nonfiction and wants to learn about human behavior and how others think and live life. It's actually quite eye opening in many ways

Oh lucky you. In my country they only translated LA Confidential (in 2012, managed to find a copy last year finally), American Tabloid and his autobiography.

I want to read original LA quartet but it would be hard to read it in English since his writing is not that easy to follow.

I just bought trilogy and wanted to start reading it after i finish HP, but then out of nowhere colleague brought me Game of Thrones (I never watched the show) and started reading it and I can't stop now, so 3BP will probably have to wait until then :monkey:

I also planned on reading Dune: Messiah but GOT ruined my plans and my budget since I have to buy all 8 books now + all the prequels and stand alones.

What genre do you usually like? I'm a librarian :chick1: I recently enjoyed Hungerstone by Kat Dunn, it's an LGBT vampire story

I mostly read historical non-fiction. Since thats literally no one's vibe, I'll just say no I don't have any recommendations :suburban:

I'm big into Stephen King right now. Only some of his books are horror ish though

Since im talking Stephen King some good options are:

The Stand

Misery

Needful Things (reading this rn)

Billy Summers (thriller from 2021)

Fire Starter

Lisey's Story (not a great first King book, but fantastic)

I read thriller books more than anything else. My fave I've read this year is a book called Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon. It's like Gone Girl but it had a gay couple as the main characters.

I've been reading more MM romance novels lately too. I have a long list to recommend but I'm not giving out what I'm interested in on here so easily. :fan:
