I'm going through Collapse right now and definitely that one. Zubok is an excellent historian and his recapping of the fall of the Soviet Union is full of vivid stories and previously-unknown details.

 

Then Beyond the Wall, which tells the history of East Germany through the eyes of its residents. Manages to offer a balanced take on the GDR.

 

Then If We Burn, which tries to answer the question: why did so many protests in the 2010s end up getting the opposite of what they wanted?

 

Towards the Abyss is essentially a collection of articles by an Ukrainian leftist from 2014 to 2023. Pretty good if you want an heterodox in-the-moment analysis of the Ukrainian crisis.

    Truly. I would have read it in a single sitting if I didn't need to put it down to go to sleep. I've been trying to find something similar to it ever since and I just can't find something that scratches the same itch. Goodreads recommended me Providence by Craig Willse and Yes, Daddy by Jonathan Parks-Ramage but I haven't read either yet to see if they're any good.
