      Melodrama is not just Lorde's best. It's one of those rare albums that come out from time to time. She's probably never surpassing it and that doesn't mean her other albums are bad.

    I love Virgin but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like Melodrama more. Melodrama will probably always be my favorite and that's okay

    I like Virgin but Melodrama almost sweeps. Lorde continues to make good music but Melodrama is just too high a hill to climb.

    I doubt Lorde is ever going to beat Melodrama because it's such a superb artistic achievement. Most artists would be lucky to create something half as good as it.

     

    However, I'm tired of judging every Lorde album against Melodrama as the standard. That's not fair to her, frankly. That said, Virgin is too young to even do a comparison against Solar Power. The album needs to cook for me. I love the production, but the lyrics are a bit obtrusive in a way that requires time to process.

    I don't want to choose right now, because I went through a phase when I listened to Melodrama too much and had to give it a break for a while, but I still love that album so much. Right now I prefer Virgin, perhaps because it's a grown up Ella with more interesting subjects, even if she is kinda messy, and the album has some rougher edges, resulting in slightly less polished pop songs. But not everything needs to be polished to a mirror finish.

     

    I want to see more live performances and spend more than a few days with the album, but right now:

    Melodrama = Virgin > Pure Heroine > Solar Power
