Thank God for this forum because I am currently educating myself on all of the UK/Australia girl groups that never broke through into America, and I'm realizing there are quite a few and their songs CRAP on the American ones. So many catchy, melodic BOP after BOPS.

 

Does America just hate catchy music and women? Is that what it really comes down to?

well were they released or pushed here?

 

 

and the ones that tried did the wrong songs and/or were sabotaged by their label

I think you guys forget stuff had to be released here for Americans to hear it, for the most part lol

They hate girl and boy groups remember America only really Stan country 

DC and PCD are two of the most iconic girl groups in history worldwide tho  

 

 

This country hates women. Instead of electing a woman president, we got Trump again. That says it all.

girl groups & boy bands are a thing of the past. sure we still have some but they will never reach the heights of the 90s/00s groups.

the members of a girl group don't like being in a girl group either because the members themselves desire to be the next Beyoncé

Americans saw Destiny's Child and realized no one would be living up the that 

girl groups are the best example of sexism in the music industry

-labels never knew how to market them

-didn't market them to a female audience (biggest mistake)

-often sexualized in a way the GP didn't like, or only appeals to men that are not gonna be their fans

-didn't allow them creative control, often seen as label puppets

-young girls and minorities more prone to abuse and control tactics

-poor working conditions and often created a hostile competitive environment, resulting in internal strife within the group, sometimes intentionally

 

that's just the tip of the iceberg. girl groups succeed internationally because they have female fans.

Well, DC's "bootylicious" was the last time a girl group song went #1 on BH100... Let that sink in.

boy bands are charting in the top ten every month. western boy bands may not be a thing anymore, but the success of 1D and others is significantly larger than most girl groups. there's still demand for BSB, Jonas Bros, Nsync etc. labels don't make artists or invest in talent any more, they only sign people that are already doing well. there's not really a reason that young guys would start a boyband by themselves, so they are all solo artists now.

What do you mean multiple? You have BP and then Babymonster and Lessera but they'll be doing arenas.

labels probably don't invest because they're guaranteed to break up a couple years down the line

The girlgroups that became successful in the US were those that sexualized themselves to the point of objectification, like 5H and PCD.  Girlgroups from other countries tend to be more about female empowerment and other topics that Americans find "cheesy." Groups like Girls Aloud or Little Mix, for example, would never make it in the US due to their campy take on femininity and observational comedy-style lyrics which are above the intellect of the average American.  K-Pop and J-Pop groups also could never make it big in the US because they sing in "weird languages" that don't sound "normal" like English.   The only thing the average Yank can comprehend is "Look! Hot girl writhing around in minimal clothing," because they don't see women as much more than that.

Fundamentally it can be tied to the way America is governed. Individualism is prioritized in America. America is not a community based country like most of the world. 
 

Public transport? No. Get your own car.

Apartment? No. Get your own house with a yard. 
Universal healthcare? No. Get your own private insurance. 
etc.

 

So girl and boy groups don't really work because we're so used to individualism. Having a group where you actually need to know 6 members because they're all singing (unlike PCD where you only needed to know Nicole, etc.) is confusing and not appealing.  

Idk but PCD needs to make a TRUE comeback

I think you just contradicted yourself. You named bands that were popular when other girl groups were popular. And that brings your final point, maybe female artists don't join groups because they want to be solo. I'm trying to find your logic.

Does Atrl know its music history? There's examples going against your point for decades. If we start with the 50s/60d girl groups were huge. To the point that many of them are considered hugely influential in the creation of rock and pop music. In the 80s/90s we had tons of popular girl groups primarily in r&b. The 2000s also had its own groups. 
 

Billboard had an article that the 10s and now is actually an anomaly. Groups were essentially the majority in Western especially American popular music. It has nothing to do with individual/collectivism because then you'll have to explain the past 75 years of music.
