Nelly furtado. What went wrong?

Featured Replies

Loose era was a success and she had the talent and acclaim to hold momentum up, but things went deep south afterwards so why couldnt canadian portuguese queen bounce and why did everyone abandon her to the point her last album studio did like 8k units in the US?

I blame that horrible spanish album

How is she a one-era wonder when her debut had 2 hits and sold like 4-5 million?

    She's your typical one-era wonder.

Nothing?

Nelly mentioned that she felt so overwhelmed by how big the era was and didn't like it so she slowed down quite a bit hence why the took the break and release her spanish album in between. Also by the time returned to music the pop landscape had change so much.

She had a big era before Loose, so what are you even talking about?

Too long a break, gave throwback vibes,  music wasn't very interesting, old and didn't bring anything inspiring or new

She needed to release more after Loose, but instead she went away for way too long. Pop music changed and people moved on. I did expect her new album to do better considering how huge she use to be and for nostalgia alone.

The new album was also just OK, it wasn't as good as her debut or Loose. Those are incredible albums.

These sales weren't that impressive back then. The GP primarily knows her Loose era.

Her first album sold 8 millions, second album 2 millions and third album over 10 millions so ... how? LOL

Im Like a Bird and Turn Off The Lights were both Top 10 singles from her debut

The GP isn't what you see in the morning in your bathroom mirror.

But that doesn't mean she's a one era wonder when her success expands beyond 1 era...

Releasing Mi Plan after Loose instead of an English album.

The follow-up to Loose being released 6 years later and being a spanish album on top of that certainly didn't help but the core issue was that she didn't care to build a celebrity profile. She literally drops off the face of the planet once promo for her current album stops and resurfaces half a decade later. That's not how you sustain a commercial pop career and relevancy.

to me it feels like she always just kind of did what she wanted; if you listen to the whole Whoa, Nelly and Folklore albums apart the singles, you can hear that she likes to play around with sound and songwriting. Loose was just a runaway success and maybe she was satisfied having done that, knew that the hits would pay her rent and kept on making what she wanted, hence Mi Plan and The Spirit Indestructible (ahead of its time)

Music market changed after 2010 and she couldn't or didnt want to adapt her artistic choice to current trends, then took long break and voila, thats it

:ahh:

She didn't release another album in English for 6 years and then lead with Big Hoops (Bigger The Better). It's well known at this point that she did this on purpose because she wanted more time at home with her family. She didn't enjoy being a huge mainstream pop star.

She released a Spanish album 3 years after Loose instead of releasing another album like Loose right away. And by the time The Spirit Indestructible came out, the world had already moved on to Katy, Gaga, Kesha, Adele, etc.

Well all above mentioned choices + it was a very common path for pop girls back than to have a huge era and than decline fast or disappear. Fergie, Gwen and Ciara comes to mind.
