As we all know, Rihanna hasn't dropped an album since "Anti" which turns 10 next year. In 2017, she appeared on a string of singles by other artists: "Loyalty", "Wild Thoughts", "Lemon"...

Since then, her only musical output has been a PartyNextDoor feature in 2020 and a soundtrack single for Black Panther in 2022. She's been virtually inactive during the peak years of the streaming era.

 

Yet despite this... she's currently #12 in daily streams and #6 in monthly listeners on Spotify globally. Averaging 25m daily streams, 90m monthly listeners. She's competing with the most prolific artists of the streaming age almost a decade into her hiatus, which is unheard of.

 

Now the question is... with no new album on the horizon, how much longer can this last?

 

When she stops being seen as cool. So if either she gets involved in a career ending scandal, or if she drops new music and it's an alarming let down.

Katy Perry is literally the uncoolest artist alive and the streaming numbers of her old albums are still very good. I don't think Rihanna has anything to worry about that

Perhaps in 10 years, when the current artists become "legacy" and pushes the other "legacy" artists down the list. Unless she has another hit song that pushes up her catalog.

I think in 5 years it'll start to decline. I don't think she's ever releasing another album again, like ever.

When she hits 50 it'll be a natural decline. I don't think she'll decline too much though but enough to make a dent. 

Never, her hits are classics that don't need TikTok trends or other things to prop them up

not sure, but it'll last a while. she truly created a legacy of hits

But she could've been the one to truly pass Madonna in numbers. She's one of the more deserving ones - a mi perecer. She's the "coolest" female pop star for sure.

Unfortunately music goes through a period of decline and Rihanna's catalog never regains its dominance again. 

I think her numbers will maintain and could even increase a little as long as millennials are streaming music. However streaming is still very much in its growing phase. Every year Spotify keeps adding millions of users and every year millions of kids get phones and internet access etc. So while Rihanna's numbers could maintain, the audience that streams other newer artists will only keep growing, pushing her down the charts.

Nirvana gets bigger every year, when people revisit the 2000s and 2010s, she'll always benefit the most, considering the number of hits she amassed.

Real classic hits from the 70s and 80s are only increasing in streams. The answer is never is you have REAL global classics. If you rely on PR-driven fame instead of real hits it will be bad news, however. 

Probably next millennium, given if she doesn't release again. But this one? I don't think so.

 

Her hits has sustained longer than some of the legends before her.

Sade will be almost gone a decade & a half yet still come back slaying. Anything is possible!

 

I think there will always be an audience for Rihanna. The demand is growing each hat that past. I do think she will release in 2026 10 years 

when streaming services shut down

Realistically, if she doesn't release new music for some more years, the numbers will go down (but I've thought that this would happen since like 2020 and I've been proven wrong). She could also release and not do that well, but I think the definite hits like Umbrella, Diamonds, Love on the Brain will always do good numbers but the smaller hits would probably get less streams as the years go by.
