I'm struggling to even rank the tracks. They're all 10s for me.

God I hope this at least sells a million copies so we can forget about Solar Power's floppage (I love SP before people make the wrong assumption)

broken glass has the potential to become my favorite, but whew, it's a lot 

Virgin is a decent record but still falls short from Melodrama (an album that's hard to top). This album will prob grow on me but in a sea of new releases this album doesn't stand out as exceptional. A lot of this record feels very samey in its production in a regressive way but also in a way it's Lorde going back to her signature so I'm not upset about it. I think the next album she makes after this will be a LOT better because this feels like she's getting back to herself. Favorite Daughter, WWT, Broken Glass, If She Could See Me Now.

 

Also Solar Power is better than this album why are yall all trashing it here nonstop

I'm interested to know why you feel like this is a regression to her signature sound and, what exactly her signature sound is? Especially since you picked the most mainstream sounding tracks as your favorites.

All her albums are very different from each other to me, so if someone asked me to point to a song that represented Lorde's sound, I'd struggle to pick one.

not really. i liked solar power a lot more than this album, a lot of which weren't very upbeat pop songs. i don't like how pretentious lorde is as an artist and don't find her crooning in acapella with vacuous poetry like imogen heap to be very appealing sorry. david is a nice song though.

Don't need to be sorry. I can understand why you wouldn't relate too much with it.

Lorde likes to pick a concept and really stick to it every album but I don't think it's a coincidence that everybody heard WWT and instantly thought 'oh Lorde is back now'. Very spacey and somewhat minimalist but still pop production is what she is known for. Even when songs are bigger they're really just built off of one or two synths and some sort of exaggerated syncopated drums. The only album that really sticks out as a large departure to me is Solar Power for that obvious reason. I said it felt regressive because it's not as good as her older work, not that it was necessarily bad. There's strong songs on here still but it feels like she's playing in a space she is familiar with and returning back to it. I think her next record will have more potential because of that.

 

I mentioned my favorite album tracks because they're the only ones that majorly stuck out to me. They felt like her older work sonically but with a grown up lyrical tinge. Wasn't very swayed by Current Affairs at all like people in here even though the topic is interesting. Man of the Year is an obvious highlight and seems like a good merging of the 'Lorde' sound with the sensibilities she brought to Solar Power of building songs up to a big ending. It has the confessional tone of her tracks with some artifice and feels less put on because she seems less insecure. That's the evolution I thought would be present on a lot of the record that (in my opinion) isn't really there.

Melodrama is stil her best album, but this is very solid and cohesive. My faves are Shapeshifter and Favourite Daughter. 

LOVE how Solar Power deluxe coded this is.

 

It's been outgrowing WWT? for me. Aging like a fine man.
