Just look at Namie Amuro's catalogue being N/A on Spotify and their most successful J-Pop export Ayumi Hamasaki not even cracking 1 million monthly listeners. They're already past their commercial prime. I would say they're transitioning into legacy act status rn but they still remain a cultural force to be reckoned with. A Beyonce selling out stadium shows despite getting outstreamed by Katy Perry tea i dont blame Ayumi. She's deaf from one ear and like 50% from the other one. Sooner or later she will go full deaf. Is actually a miracle she's still makin music and performing with her bad disease. She also had ankle surgery and has so many issues with that All her videos are on youtube- she's still connecting with her fanbase with the TA-Instagram She has 2 sons. She's Doin concerts all the time and all over Japan. Recently released an album and it has trendy sounds like House "Summer Again", Released a song about the pandemic "Monster" Her label Avex Trax took bad decisions and theyre near bankrupcy-went bankrupt. She's doin a lot with the small budget she has. Japan is now here for Female big Groups only. They dont care about solo female singers that much anymore --------------------------------- Namie is honestly dissapointing. None of her videos on youtube. Just forgot about her fans. Erased her catalogue from spotify Is like she hated her career. I love Namie but im so sad of how she just dissapeared....... Edited August 19 by AvadaKedavra
Edonis Posted August 19 Posted August 19 There's a plethora of political mishaps that contributed to the bubble burst of the early 90s that subsequently led to Japan never climbing out of that economic hole, but someone else could probably explain it better than me lol. Still, the old-school mindset so many people in high-ranking positions have is enough to show how difficult it would be to drive positive change. And younger leaders really don't hold much weight with their words. I work for the largest Japanese trade company in the world and...well...you can see that far too often as well. I'm very curious how the country is going to move forward once all the old LDP-stans croak.

Nothing wrong with that but she was affected by her numbers dwindling. She doesn't chart and no one streams or downloads anything she's released in the last 10-15 years. Utada is still successful with new songs in Japan. There's reasons for this but Ayumi Hamasaki has fallen deeply out of favor with the General Public and her fandom is 1/100th the size it was at her peak. Ayumi was smart for capitalizing off her initial hype and releasing hella often though. Raised her sales figures also on top of the fact that after her third album she started steadily expanding her musical range. Which unfortunately came at the cost of streadily weakening her fanbase. Though it's unfair to compare Utada and Ayumi. As Utada has always been bigger than Ayumi. I think the only JP pop girl to have as much GP pull over the longest stretch of time outside of her is Kana. Just let me live in my delusion
Phaunzie Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Well the West hates it when a non-white country gains power, so they made subliminal smear campaigns to associate Japan with degenerates. Hell, anime only got cool in the 2010s, before the internet was made more accessible Japanese culture was very locked off from the rest of the world. Like, there isn't a need to export Japanese products because Japan fully supports itself. It is why despite their sudden emergence in pop culture in the early 2010s, you would hard pressed to find any media Japan exclusive elsewhere.
Robert Posted August 21 Posted August 21 (edited) I mean they are still a superpower I would say. Asia's 2nd largest economy and is still a world leader in cars, video games, electronics and cuisine. The aging population as well as US inteevention don't help. For such a modern country, they are very set in their ways which can lead to failure to innovate or adapt. South Korea for example are very good at exporting their TV and music but many Japanese artists are still not on Spotify. Edited August 21 by Robert 1
Dula Peep Posted August 22 Posted August 22 I feel like they've taken the Sweden/Scandinavian approach and stopped caring about being the best, it's very mindful, very demure….
Gov Hooka Posted August 22 Posted August 22 The contradictions of their hyper capitalist, post-fascist, mono cultural society are coming to fruition… Doesn't help being a vassal state of the US empire

Sugar-Rush Posted August 22 Posted August 22 Japan is incredibly xenophobic and they loathe the concept of immigration. I'm a huge Japanophile but I would never travel there because as I'm biracial, I feel that I wouldn't feel welcomed or comfortable there.

Asian's xenophobic is very subtle, they usually wouldn't show negative attitudes directly towards you, they tend to put on a mask to seem polite irl, they mostly do that online.
byzantium Posted August 22 Posted August 22 I think the extreme homogeneity, extreme work culture, and cultural conservatism hampers innovation and makes the country non-competitive against other developed economies. Japan is still a very successful, developed country though. I would be interested in having a conversation about the growth obsessed economies of the world are healthy or if the growth is coming from desired sectors.
DanyelP23 Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Japan is a legacy artist right now, but still with a very strong (domestic) fanbase. That's why she doesn't even bother with promo for her new releases. The royalties and relevance she gets from Anime, Pokemon, Nintendo will always keep her relevant. Also let's not forget that if there's a country in Asia any MPG or relevant Western artist is going to tour, Japan will be THAT country.
MonsterJohn Posted August 24 Posted August 24 Japan is forever iconic and influential, like Gaga they never lost the star power even when getting imitated by upcoming new power like Ava Max (South Korea) 3
Doogle Posted August 24 Posted August 24 South Korea and China stay on her neck. People act like it's the future but people here are using fax machines plsss Love it tho! Don't deport me

aotwbys Posted August 25 Posted August 25 Japan has a lot of clout but messed up with EVs and robots. China is ahead on tech now. Maybe the reason is Japan's old-fashioned bureaucracy mindset
