We Can't Be Friends exploding on Spotify - what went right?

Featured Replies

This era was prematurely deemed a flop. "yes, and?" was called an even more front-loaded "Hold It Against Me." And yet...so, what went right?

  • Anecdotally, I think the defiant and almost dismissive nature Yes, and? irritated people. The pivot to a more introspective and sympathetic song won people back round again. The video also helped sell

  • The first thing I would play for a Mariah Carey stan after their playlist ended is Ariana Grande.

Talent always wins.

Heartbreaking lyrics, a captivating video, Ari's emotive vocals = organic success

To be fair, there's plenty of songs that have TTH residencies and don't have nearly similar numbers. Good playlisting and promo only makes songs with potential and GP interest blow up and remain stable.

This song is cute and I'm not trying to start fights here—

BUT, I will say the way this song won't leave me alone on Spotify is a little weird. I listened to Kacey Musgraves's new album this morning, and when it was done, We Can't Be Friends shuffled on first. Like.... why would they go to a pop-R&B girl and not a country artist?

Earlier this week the same thing happened after I listened to Annie Lennox's 1992 album Diva :deadbanana2: Spotify radio will often give you artists from the same time (like after Ari, it went to Madonna, then The Eurythmics, both understandable choices), so it going right to WCBF obviously seemed pretty weird to me.

it's a great song, simple as that, lemme go queue it a couple of times to get my daily dose of it

"yes, and?" just wasn't all that. it's not a bad song and it's okay to admit it, she had much stronger material on the album. plus the Mariah remix was ass.

It only got to #1 on TTH for 1 day. It achieved more than  for 3-4 days at #15 on TTH :skull:

Glad the song is doing well but does anyone else think the numbers look abnormal?

The song is keeping almost exactly the same streams 9.2-9.4 for the past 5 days with barely any huge changes.

Usually hit songs will either have signifcant increases/decreases but this one is barely changing

She made a great song with an amazing music video and the public responded accordingly. It's cozy, heartfelt and danceable, what's not to love.

thank you for your everlasting influence Robyn :clap3:

(wcbf is a great song though, very catchy)

The song is amazing. Ariana is a huge public figure. Playlisting is good and promo is good. Why are acting surprised that a MPG is doing good numbers with a new single off an album she just dropped? :khalyan2:

this happened to me too with Flowers and yes, and?. i don't even listen to Miley or Ariana regularly. i had to temporarily block them on Spotify just to get away from it. :rip:

I get your point as it relates to genre, but it might be less about genre and more about other similar user's listening habits in some cases. I think it's very conceivable that Kacey Musgrave's and Ariana Grande's album have similar audiences (every white girl and gay I know is obsessed with both right now), so naturally if you listen to one you might get recommended the most popular stuff by the other - which right now happens to be WBCF for Ari.

Performing very similarly to other hits of hers in terms of stability
