The bar is low for you but judging by your favs then yes she devoured

I came for “Only U”, but this is a close second.  Despite not being a strong singer, she always picked production that complimented her voice well.

People like to downplay that, but truth is…that’s a talent too.  She’s not out here getting clowned like J Lo, etc…because she knows what suits her.  And she knows what’s interesting to the ear.

And not to mention her writing talent…

Low? Name my favs. My favs have classics.

You tried it.

she truly was that girl during her time

she’s a great WRITER too

Her material during her peak years was immaculate. But she devoured more with Foolish and Only U tbh.

This is one of my all-time favorite R&B records. The production is immaculate.

The live version is amazing too. When she intertwines Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” in the bridge :clap3:

now imagine the serve if you would’ve put the Only U up there instead of the other song :jonny5:

she barely took a bite but ok

are we lying today

Also, this is a very specific niche of R&B that I cannot put my finger on. You can’t hear it at all today in music.

It’s almost Beach Boys-influenced with the guitar chords, but it’s heavy R&B. You can hear it in “Rock the Boat” too. Beach-y, air-y R&B. I literally cannot describe it.

I feel like I’m in the twilight zone…this song has always been great and I’ve never seen anyone deny that except for now… but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since we’re on atrl

The beats for both songs...the rhythms are somewhat reminiscent of Jamaican dancehall music but with a slower tempo and lighter, happier chords you'd hear in reggae.

For example, this dancehall song from the same time period

I’m not hearing it in that record @LesFleur

You can hear it more here, but perfectly at 3:19 until the end of this one

I miss 00s R&B play on dancehall & spanish guitar.

Some of y’all are so miserable :rip:

Happy and Foolish and Baby are all classics

I miss early 00s R&B so much… such a nostalgic rush back to childhood and (seemingly) simpler times
