Flowers was still at #1 for a few weeks. It was smart to wait for Jaded.

Flowers is still top 3 on the Hot 100, and top 3 in most major music markets... She could have released the best song of all time alongside the album and it still would have underperformed compared to a mega smash that hasn't even finished its run at #1. A You Da One tea. 

 

River was a cute way to show the album wasn't just Flowers-type songs. In hindsight maybe Rose Coloured Lenses or Thousand Miles would have been better choices commercially but they don't really show off the range of sounds on the album, and sending a potential hit like Jaded off to die would have been dumb. 

Great choice! Delete River.

I'm just glad they're not abandoning the era and actually releasing another single  

I just hope Miley does something... At this point I'll be happy if we even get an MV ddd

thematically a better follow up to flowers

 

however, I get that river was more of an upbeat bop follow up

the song was charting for a while on Global and US, but it fell off like a week ago. Still charting at #136 in Canada where it's been on the official charts for 4 weeks now.
