Melanie Martinez just released her 3rd album, PORTALS. Only a day or two after release, it's become a bit of a joke for the chronically online, with typical indiesphere dorks mocking it on sites like RYM, AOTY, Needle Drop, etc.

 

I have to ask... Why is this? I'm a Bjork stan before anything, but hardly anyone showed Fossora much love once it dropped, so all the "Bjork for Shein" jokes are kind of forced, if you ask me. 

 

Is it because of the rape allegations? Is it because she's weird/creepy/disturbing? Is it because the music is really that bad? 

 

Personally, you can't tell me this song/video combo isn't a major serve:

 

I was hoping her album would have been more of a rock-oriented departure (like DEATH), but I do like it in general, even if her lyrics are weird/goofy at times. 

 

And, despite the online snark, she's still projected to sell up to 90K her first week, which is excellent no matter which way you frame it. 

 

So why? Why is Melanie getting so much hate? ATRL, step up to the mic...

I think Void is best song released so far in 2023 but people will lie and admit it's not. 

 

 

I really liked the 1st single and I usually don’t like anything from her it’s just that the visuals are always giving cringe, it’s not that they’re not good, it’s the way she acts and dances in em that gives a weird off vibe.

Honestly who cares? She's literally creating the exact music she wants to with full creative control of the sound and vision AND still selling decently. Something that any artist dreams of. She WON.  

I think the sexual assault claims severely damaged her reputation, but outside of that, that's something very effortful about her work. Something about it that screams "See? I'm an artiste!" I can see how that would turn people off. Portals is alright, but it's not quite hitting for me. Certainly won't be making my list of best records of the year tbh.

She makes terrible music and those reviews are all deserved. she fetishises babies and is a r*pist so i don’t see what’s not to hate about her

Looking at the first day Spotify streams of her album I'd say she is doing fine.

I've only seen hate on ATRL.

(And before y'all @ me about her being a rapist or whatever, this is my first era of hers and I barely know anything about the allegations. But it sounds like this is the main reason... Aside from her being generally creepy/weird.)

I don’t hate her but the specific aesthetic she chose with her first two records just wasn’t something I was comfortable with and it killed any further interest I had in her. 

I hate everyone hating on her. Most of these haters are probably Björk and Lana Del Rey's stans.

I mean, it is indeed like she's trying to cosplay auteurs like e.g. Björk and Fever Ray with very bland music that sounds obviously produced by mediocre top 40 producers. There's nothing inventive or ambitious there sonically. At least make actual bops while giving weird visuals like Gaga did and you'll look less of a fool who just doesn't have the range.

People can't tolerate when talent effortlessly wins 

If you want to be creepy like Billie Eilish did in her first era, the music HAS TO BE good, otherwise, you just come across as try-hard and extremely cringe.

Maybe do a quick Google search or look through ATRL past threads before making your own? That would save you and US a lot of time and finger strokes.

I personally don't hate her per say but i find her overrated and there's something really creepy about her, something's "off" with her art.

Idk but she’s ambitious and I think that should be encouraged 

she’s just not likeable and the music is subpar, so the allegations gave people more reason to dislike her. whether real or not, it doesn’t matter to some because she’s already weird & off-putting as it is.

I believe so, I think I read the timings of the incidents being alleged were quite fully debunked.

She just tries too hard and yet her music is bad lol you’re a water down top 40 on a budget music kinda artist but tryna act edgy and serve artistry.
