Is 'dated' inherently a bad thing?

Featured Replies

Most people who say a song was dated on release are tasteless cause its usually very good

Not really. It's one of the weakest "drags" ever. And most people throw it when they have nothing else to say.

.

for me, a song is dated if it's chasing dead trends in a very lazy, unimaginative way.

you can make an 80s sounding song and not have it sound dated if you use the 80s inspiration creatively and make it your own.

that being said, even a corny, dated song is not necessarily always bad. it can still be a cute bop that i'll indulge in, but i wouldn't consider it particularly high in artistic value :michael:

no. there’s dated songs that are still major bops. being of it’s time isn’t a bad thing at all

All music becomes “dated” immediately after its sound is no longer popular.

It takes a few years but eventually that starts to add to a song’s charm again (if it’s well made).

Using “dated” as a drag should be reserved for songs that were always terrible but saw success because they hopped on a trendy sound.

also i don't use this term a bunch cause some of you b*tches overuse the fUUck out of it and it's tired. it's dated lol. i just had a snoozeberry cereal milk from snooze so i'm definitely very honest rn. uhhmmm idk songs that sound very 80s are souper fun and even if the synths are dated i still enjoy listening to them in certain moods

No.

People that play ATRL Song Contest or ATRL's Vanishing Letters will use it as a stupid drag to keep players from submitting anything before late 2010s/early 2020s. Right @thecptz ?

Not at all, I still enjoy "dated" music like Ke$ha's 2010-2012 music.

It's not a bad thing for the listener but if you're an artist who cares about your craft, being called 'dated' is a huge scratch on the ego as most strive to be progressive with their sound and fresh.

Not at all. Janet's 80s music is of its time and even some of Mariah's and Madonna's but doesnt preclude them from being bops
