Sister, the whole point of Night of Hunters is its orchestral sound. I love the wind instruments! I think the others could've been more piano heavy indeed, but I also can't imagine them as solo piano songs for some reason?

@Démodé yaaay! At first listen most of it will pale in comparison the The Reindeer King, but it is a very rewarding album of you stick with it.

Mark is definitely fruity and liked getting pegged in the 90s, are we still debating that?

I agree with NoH, I love it the way it is, I prefer a mix of original and Sin Palabras where I replace the Tash duets with instrumentals.

And I.... have some feeling for songs like Wings, but see you in a bit.

Oh wow.... that was a Ride (Giddy Up, Giddy Up).

This was her most exciting and adventurous record post Scarlet for me. Reindeer King, Up the Creek (career highlight), Chocolate God, Bang (and its lovely quirky lyrics giving a callback to Datura).... so many good songs here.

It's the first time post Scarlet I will not be making a playlist to declutter the filler...and I'll leave it at that.

Finally a fellow Chocolate Song lover Yes it's a really great album — she tapped into something really vital there. Make sure to look up the live version of Climb, it's one of my favourite songs of hers.

I thought Chocolate was very lush and delicious, albeit a tad guilty pleasure of a song. I love it!

Yeah, I also love the way it builds and when the warmth comes rushing in in the lead up to the second chorus. And the lyrics a bitsy too good when you've been in a very long relationship.

sorry queens I didn't mean the ONLY version of NOH should be on solo piano but a vulnicura strings tea where we have the option to hear them that way

I know the orchestra is the point of the album as a whole but the songs themselves (and some of the mixing sorry) really gets exhausting when it's doing the full 1940s Disney thing constantly. Like when a good nachos is really by getting soggy from too much topping to chip ratio, I can't really appreciate the lyrics & melody when it's overloaded with honky clarinets.

I actually like the live quartet version of Star Whisperer better than the album because there's way less going on and you can actually hear between the instruments, it's not a big cloud of drama constantly

yas and it only reveals itself more over time, she did her big one with that album. I really think old Tori fans (like the 50+ ones) do her a disservice because they're so set in her ways, always sharing very strong opinions as if they're definitive and it puts off new listeners who read about her

Like the pervasive narrative THEY have pushed is that she falls off creatively, her voice post-2009 is unlistenable, her lyrics became basic etc etc and it's just not true whatsoever. I think people doing the rate will be very pleasantly surprised by NI and OTO!

American Doll Posse would've been such a serve and listed in a bunch of critics all time best list if she wasn't holding that damn chicken on the album cover so people would've taken her more seriously!

Her drop in album cover quality post-Scarelt needs to be studied in general like how do you go from her immaculate 90s album covers to damn Photoscape photoshoots ma'am

but even NI has absolute duds like Arrow and Wings tbh.... absolutely messy lyrics

but I agree, I've got a friend who's a Tori diehard and absolutely trashes her output post 2005 (he's lenient towards Beekeeper). He won't be very happy I'm loving this album

Tori feels very Irish to me, I cannot explain it, there's an intrinsic connection. Iveagh Gardens also is one of my favourite places in Dublin.

Funny you should say that because as teen I was obsessed with Ireland and Irish culture (including music). Maybe the Tori obsession is just a continuation then!

During my gig in Brussels she kept babbling about how musical the Irish are. I don't know if she was reading us. The only thing we share is catholic trauma and fondness for alcohol.

Ireland is one of the best places on earth to live, it's an experience. I wasn't obsessed but I fell in love with it when I lived there, it's like my 2nd home now.

The religious trauma definitely resonates with Tori herself too, makes sense why she recorded BfP there too.
