Her team is scared of her flopping. A massive flop album can kill a career

Let’s be honest here, for Gaga to be successful with new music in 2023 (and beyond) she needs a massive campaign. A standalone single would flop into oblivion.

Fans beg her for new music and then immediately turn on her if it underperforms, why would she want to release new music for them when she can live off royalties from her hits filled discography? Besides, the music industry is a disaster, it is smart for her to focus on other industries and only release new music to win awards and go on tour

I very much agree with this:

- her team DO NOT want a flop, they will always have her come out acceptable - even if it means relying on hype and the first week like SL. LFS was a bit different she almost won AOTY. This is why they don’t waste hype on droplets

- fans 100% be annoying and turn when something flops (I include myself in this too :eli:). I used to lurk during ASIB everyone was so kind to each other, Chromatica was horrible and thereafter.

When she is focused on working on an album, she posts about it. This is true for every single one of her albums.
Based on her past behavior, it would be unusual for her not to do that.

It seems pretty clear that she has not made any major progress towards LG7. Maybe she is finally taking a break.

This. It’s very hard to believe she’s working on new music when she hasn’t at least posted a studio pic or teased something. She started talking about ARTPOP, Joanne and Chromatica at least 1 year prior to their release dates.

she's also really past the phase of chasing hits in her career imo

is she tho? i mean yuh i would like for her to do what you described but shes a pop star, a superstar. It needs to sell. You don't get to perform in Stadiums when youre Charli XCX. And her career ain't that long too, she still needs hits.

LG7’s campaign needs to be fully planned out and needs to be put out at the right time

I wish she would do something like this for LG7 lead single. A soul crushing, tear jerking, emotional love ballad would captivate the GP, unlike the usual dance-pop.

The thing is, it really doesn’t matter whether she has or hasn’t worked on new music. We’re not getting an album before 2026 regardless.

This, maybe not 2026 but for sure until awards season 2025 is gonna be over at very least.

JFAD is gonna be massive for her, she's definitely going to keep the hype and a very low profile + break that realistically she needs, sure she's gonna work on the new album but it's not gonna be release this or next year.

Not to mention she has the soundtrack next year which still counts like a new music release in the real world.

Well it's not like she's gonna fade back to Charli level :gaycat6: If she keeps serving great tours she'll cement her status as a touring legend (kinda already there) and one of the biggest from her generation with Taylor (Bey/Pink as well although they're not from the same gen) and she'll tour stadiums and arenas in her 50/60s even if her albums chart for 4 weeks.

I'm not saying that hits are not important cause as you said she's a pop star at the end of the day, they just shouldn't be her main priority imo. Another Top 10 hit with 1B streams won't do **** for her legacy when she already has MASSIVE classics. A really strong body of work that gets hailed as a magnum opus by everyone from critics to fans to casual listeners? Yes please. The hits will come if the material is strong enough and well promoted.

Yea the person who told me this would definitely know so I don’t doubt it at all but I didn’t really get the clear answer on what exactly they’ll be working on. Saw some people on Twitter saying they’re finalising LG7 which is not true. We’ll see I guess

Did he tell you anything about who else could be involved in the studio sessions ?

There's no way some of you genuinely believe that she hasn't written a single new song in the last THREE years :rip:

The only thing obvious enough IMO, both as a result of passage of time and a surface-level observation of her career at this stage in her life, is that we're in the middle of experiencing longer wait times between her music eras from here on out. There's a noticeable change in her pace of releasing albums now that she's 15+ years into her career and music isn't her sole priority anymore.

That said, we also still have to keep in mind that she's a songwriter first and foremost, something that she has always prided herself in since the very beginning. She's always writing new songs and coming up with new melodies, scribbling in a notepad, recording on her phone, playing a chord idea on her piano etc. She's also a really skilled multi-tasker and can effectively manage doing multiple things at once. But even if you take that out of the equation, she has still had multiple, sometimes months-long gaps between all her different projects since.

We also have excerpts from different interviews (going back as much as early 2021) that vaguely hint at her being in some sort of a transitional phase:

So... yeah. I just don't think she's waiting until 2025/26 to put out a new album. That's too long a wait and there's still almost a year before the JFAD promo campaign rollout begins. It's possible, sure, but I'm not buying it just yet. :swan:

Regardless if she has started working on new music which of course could be possible, I just don't see her releasing and going into a new era before JFAD, she doesn't have any convenience, JFAD is gonna be very massive for her, she's going to be everywhere media wise and I think it's more convenient for her starting that era without coming from a music project that could be a risk for various reasons, not to mention she has the JFAD soundtrack to release as well.

I think she's gonna play her cards in the best possible way for that project.

The best scenario would be releasing a droplet or a collaboration this year but it seems unlikely at this point.

The Super Bowl performance was Joanne’s campaign. The whole album’s creation and promotion revolved around that performance. Gaga mentioned that she let the Super Bowl executives listen to Joanne before it officially came out. It is unlikely Gaga would have made an album like that at that time if she didn’t have that performance slot.
It was all apart of her good will campaign to rebrand herself.

Her career transformation between 2014-2017 is incredible and should be studied by the music industry

But to my point, to stay as relevant as she is now, she needs a massive campaign for her album roll outs, like the Super Bowl. Chromatica’s success relied on working with popular streaming artists and heavy playlisting. It also did benefit from coming out after ASIB even though some people don’t agree with that.
LG7’s campaign needs to be fully planned out and needs to be put out at the right time for her to stay a relevant mainstream artist in the music industry. Waiting til after JFAD would guarantee a moderate hit album. Flopping right before JFAD would be a risky move

What’s this rewriting of history? Gaga said she scrapped LG5 after the Oscars when she performed Til It Happens to You and saw how well received that performance and felt like the world was ready to see her as Stefani more than ever… the SB performance was secured as also a way to let the world know of this new Gaga cause they knew it would have its detractors

also BM was a minor hit for her in the US (first solo top 10 on pop radio in a decade) while she wasn’t pushing much… the world will always be ready for Gaga music it just needs to be good

Where is this from? I have never heard this before

I never heard her speak on the impact of that TIHTY performance either....interesting if true :sherlock:

I remember reading about it in 2017 or sth… can’t find anything about it right now but I remember her saying she felt like she had the support of people with just baring her emotions without the eccentricity

Besides, the music industry is a disaster, it is smart for her to focus on other industries and only release new music to win awards and go on tour

If her team would have been scared of her flopping they would have definitely did different choices in all these years..

I don't think she and her team care about charts-numbers much at this point of her career, but for sure with her starring in the most anticipated sequel in years, she has tones of hype, coming from a music era underperformance is not really ideal, whereas it wouldn't be a big deal if it happens after the movie, we know how media perception plays a big factor during awards campaign.

I think Gaga is gonna play her cards for this movie in the best possible way, I expect her to keep a low profile even during the release of the movie, she's definitely not going to campaign like she did during the HOG era and I think she's definitely not going to start a music era the same year of the release of this movie.

Also she obviously not going to tour next year, there's no point in launching an era, taking a long break for the movie and then going to tour after more than a year from release, she will capitalize album release and tour like it was supposed to happen with Chromatica and she has more convenience in doing that after JFAD.

I see there’s discourse about the state of Gaga’s commercial performance and I have to agree that success is not guaranteed for her. She will have another couple of really big tours because she is very well regarded as a performer, but her musical output doesn’t have this same degree of certainty to it.

The problem with Gaga’s music since Born This Way lies solely in the consistently subpar production choices in her last three solo albums. ARTPOP relied heavily on crunchy and cheap sounding dubstep and electro that the EDM scene had long moved past from and were too abrasive to play on radio or share with your friends, making it neither commercial or experimental. Joanne although having an A-list production crew, was composed of all the wrong people. Gaga could have put together a kickass soft rock Americana album if she worked with people who were actually good in that field and could develop this sound fully for her, every single person involved in that album’s production were out of their area of expertise and it shows. Chromatica is her strongest effort of the three, there’s a handful of songs on here that bring some personality back into her music for the first time in years and it made some moves for her commercially, but I think this album suffers from putting her voice too front and centre when she didn’t have particularly anything to say on most of those tracks bar a couple, making the album still not optimal for casual listening if you don’t actually care about Lady Gaga that much.

If she wants to guarantee commercial success for herself she needs to work with better more accomplished producers and really iron out the sound of what she’s doing. Whether she wants to make something subversive and experimental or commercially friendly, the music needs to speak to that and feel convincing. These last few albums have just been nice to hear her voice on some new tracks but to me haven’t been exciting pieces of music in and of themselves.

Literally this. I'd take an acclaimed album with strong album sales and consistent streaming numbers over an era with 1 huge smash but flop numbers otherwise (think Flowers/ESV). Looking at her music career Artpop on, it's pretty obvious that she should be focusing on artistically rebounding rather than trying to get quick hits.

And as you said, it's not like she necessarily has to choose between a great body of work and chart success. As along as she has at least 1 or 2 clear single choices with potential, she can do whatever the hell she wants.

I mean, you're not wrong. And we can all go back and forth all we want over this but the thing is, there can be convincing arguments made for both cases – a pre and a post JFAD release – each with its own set of pros and cons. Now it's up to her and her team/label to assess the whole situation and do as they see fit.

Idk, let's wait and see. For now, I'm choosing to stick to my gut feeling until proven otherwise. I'm fine with waiting though, it's not like I'm losing it over here lol.

I mean, this isn’t really accurate.

If she did an album produced by someone like Arca it would probably be her best and most acclaimed but would flop commerically.

Commerical success doesn’t matter at this point in Gaga’s career. She’s already a legend. Whatever she puts out is guaranteed to at least have strong first week sales. I say she should go experimental. She’s never released a truly experimental album, and that’s the truth. ARTPOP & BTW are still mainstream pop albums with experimental elements, and everything else is just mainstream. I don’t care about the sound, but I just want her to push her artistry outside her comfort zone.

Now that AI is so good I wish someone made RA PA PA PA Perfect Illusion and that Frankeinstein song with Gaga's vocals :noparty:

Tbh, I feel the opposite. Hollywood is much more forgiving than the music industry. Hollywood only turns on people when they think they have nothing left to give financially or are too embarrassing to be tied to. Margot Robbie starred in two of the most publicized panned bombs of last year and was just offered a major MCU role.

Unless we're talking about a catastrophic mega-bomb, like Famila levels, it would be easy to sweep under the rug when a big smash film comes out a few months later. Joker would be a diversion. Whereas if it happens afterwards, there wouldn't be much of anything to do damage control with. It'd be left out to dry.
