Quote

As a holistic creative product, "Abracadabra" looks a whole lot like a Frankenstein's Monster of older, better Gaga songs: the gibberish chorus of "Bad Romance," the pearlescent bodysuits and shuddering choreography of… also "Bad Romance." But then my other half steps in with an equally valid question: When's the last time Gaga released a single this good?

this is going to sum up the reviews for Mayhem I think, I don't think the rehash critique is fair at all since both Disease and Abra are elevated and unique spins on what she's done before but whatever

Edited by sunbathinganimal

Gaga will start dominating the Best Dance Pop Recording category at the Grammys next year. Abracadabra is winning no matter what.

If that category existed during her debut, she'd have like 20 Grammys by now

this song is literally just this good and that's a fact.

Tbh I respect the review. They acknowledge it's a return to form quality wise while also not being groundbreaking. It's a mix of Gaga of the past mixed with the "dated" industrial EDM and electronics sounds of the mid 2010s yet she still makes it good enough to enjoy in 2025. The last sentence is also the most poignant. Gaga is constantly compared not to other pop stars anymore but mostly to her own past work. Even when disgruntled fans complain it's usually because she didn't give them what they liked from her past self. It's a unique hot take tbh (at least for a music publication…we on the other hand have had these discussions for ages now lol)

Maybe they should join our next ranking

idk "a cut above the average pop star" sounds like damning her with faint praise when she's way above that but it doesn't really matter p4k gonna p4k

I really don't understand that kind of critique. What do these people expect her to do? Abracadabra is the perfect example of what she does best, because no other pop star would release something like this. Yes, it has a nostalgic vibe, but it doesn't sound anything like her previous songs.

I can see them giving the album a mixed review, saying it lacks cohesiveness or relies too heavily on her "past", ugh :monkey:

This. It reads like a back-handed compliment to me.

Tbh, we've been stanning this woman for almost 20 years. The fact that publications like p4k couldn't even give Gaga a full bouquet of flowers when she released The Fame Monster even though it's largely viewed as her best work by most outlets should tell you all you need to know. I wouldn't think too much about it. It quite literally has universal acclaim.
