petal hands down, showgirl was such a disappointment

i've given petal a good, well-rounded listen, and i conclude that it is well and truly eternal sunshine's baddie alter-ego twin sister with flavours of dangerous woman and positions wrapped all in it. ari's growth throughout this album is so uncanny and majestic through her songwriting, which reminds me of elements of ES. kiss me is so enticing and a great opener to the album, somewhat cute and flirty, yet bittersweet. the production is wildly experimental and exudes 80's synth with soft and candy-floss like vocals. kinda reminds me of moonlight in a way. obvs htimylm chimes in with a prodding beat and airy melodies, which changes the tone of the album a bit. petal is really that bad b**ch anthem, i'm imagining a strip club with smoke in the air and cheeks clapping on the pole. it's so hot and reminiscent of dangerous woman, with mature and thoughtful lyrics. definitely a charming serve. stay kinda got me in my feels a bit because it's so vulnerable and reminds me of six thirty a bit, you can tell she's trying to battle her insecurities here and telling herself she's worthy, and it's beautiful. the experimental sounds that elevate the song really bring it to life. oh well is actually my favourite from the album. the production is insane but yet again, teasing eternal sunshine style lyrics. i love the openness of this song. she's obviously describing failing relationships but from the glass half full, with a nasty sting of a lyric citing "good luck on your way to hell". it seems like she wasn't done letting go of some harboured pain, and she ate that one incredibly. big feelings is giving rnb my everything energy, and it feels like i'm floating on a cloud when i listen to it. so gorgeous. now freak didn't really do it for me unfortunately, maybe i need to get into it more, but it's a little bit of a wide scale song with serene instrumentals. warning signs is cute and very raw, and a nice transition to the rest of the album. like i do really does come in with a punch, giving in my head's older sister. following in big feelings footsteps, never get over me comes in with that retro rnb influence. a beautiful and glittery ballad. now, bad thing (bunny hop) surprised me, it has this harry styles-esque sound but it works perfectly. i really hope she adds it to the setlist because i think it could translate really well live. it's a fun and lyrically transparent song, the echo-ey recording style reminds me of SZA's SOS, which emphasises ari's vocals effortlessly. nowhere, nobody made me shed a tear ngl, her honesty here is something special. it gives imogen heap in the best ways possible, with a subtle techno beat in the back. all in all, 9/10. there's definitely maturity with production and writing style. baby ari is growing and it's so cute to watch.

can this new trend of short albums stop now, i understand the girlies are trying to find peace and don't have much to say anymore or even just make songs long enough for tiktok videos but we need to be fed! super excited for the album tho

personally i think the era is too try hard for this nostalgic ysl-esque dark parisian tumblr girlie aesthetic. ofc she'll secure brand deals (the bag) with the overall look but genuinely speaking the album is just her mumbling over indie / shoegaze sounds and ag discreetly trying to throw in elements of hyper pop. when i had gone to her recent dj set, she had played music like daft punk and JUSTICE remixed into bits of the album, which slapped. but then before that she performed cherry blossom girl by air as a taster, which makes this era to be so confusing. i was hoping for more of a electronic dance rock energy but oh well.

the album really didn't do it for me, too much repetition and not much vocal ability but the song writing is interesting and honest must say ag cook and finn keane did do an amazing job with the production tho
