Found this old interview with Martin Dodd (Jive A&R) and this quote about Britney:

Quote

It was during this same period that Dodd met a girl from Louisiana who was only 15 at the time.

"We had the song '... Baby One More Time', which we had reworked several times. Suddenly Britney was there. She had been part of the TV show Mickey Mouse Club, and she came over to us in New York and did a showcase for us, which was really cool. Then we recorded it as the first song, but before that we spent 11 months setting up the record with promotion, where she played in every shopping mall you can imagine."

How did you come up with the whole staging of her?

"We often sit down and define the universe before we start. With Britney, it was something about American culture. But because it's seen from the outside – since you're not American – it gets a little exaggerated. Especially with '... Baby One More Time', which was just so super American, which I almost think you can only do if you're not American. But she came up with the schoolgirl uniform herself. Completely. She's controlled her entire image from the start. She's been playing the game since she was a little girl. "

"She's controlled her entire image from the start" yet people insist she was a label product.

The ATRL logo will probably get switched out soon since it's been almost two weeks since it's been up. Was extremely happy I got the chance to make an ATRL logo for my favorite Britney album

Hello everyone,    Just to let you know that Poker Face surpassed Toxic on Spotity.

I was looking at Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' videography on Wikipedia and it lists an unreleased video for "When Your Eyes Say It." I about fell out. Anyone know what is referring to? Was that a canceled single that I never knew about?

It's an old rumour. "When Your Eyes Say It" was listed on a music videos database (it's linked in the Wiki page) but I think that's about it, afaik no further info to corroborate or debunk it.

So bizarre.

Oh wow, I didn't knew this. "Shame" by Monrose was originally for Britney.

One of the writers, Pete Kirtley, is talking about it on a podcast.

Its been around for a while. I believe it was a rumored 5th single from OIDIA. I guess they decided to shelve it and move on to Britney

I sure hope we find out the answer about Toxic's streams in this base chile...:coffee2:

You should go ahead and make that thread. The dumbest people on here think JIVE was fueling Britney's image and it's like…..JIVE tanked BSB and NSYNC. They took 20M+ selling acts and immediately made them bomb. Their attempt at making JC Chasez a solo act will never not be the greatest fumble ever :lmao:

It has been delisted. This isn't the first time we've seen this happen. We just have to hope it gets added again in February. Unfortunately, if it does, then Gimme More will drop.

@supaspaz I can't add space or text in my original message to you. WYESI was going to be a single because Diane Warren wrote it and JIVE wanted a repeat of FTBOMBH (it wasn't a radio smash so it didn't lead to overexposure but it still sold 800k+ physical copies, bringing in revenue of $3.2M and not affecting album sales negatively). Promo singles were sent to UK radios, but they decided against it because Britney was doing two albums (Shock Your Mind and Crossroads Soundtrack, which melded to become Britney). The promo video they shot got used in commercials.

Like... Steve Lunt, Martin Dodd, Nigel Dick, David LaChapelle... All have talked about Britney's input or denied a label/team manufacture. And Jive had other young female singers signed yet they couldn't replicate what Britney achieved. Wonder why!

Have y'all seen that Popstruck Y2K thing? From what I've read it's gonna be some kind of anniversary celebration of early 2000's music by Sony/Legacy Records and they talk about "surprises" throughout the year. Someone at Exhale say there's a text sheet on their site with numbers that match with the original release of BOMT, Oops and Britney.

Whoa! Do you know which commercials?

Also, is that BTS footage from the promotional VHS with her and 'N Synch that they gave out at McDonald's? It feels so familiar.

I mean they didn't want to break the mold.

all they cared about was making money off of a short term teen pop career.

she signed to a 3 album contract and they wanted her to look like a power ranger fighting off animated monsters because 8-12 year olds would love it.

Britney single handedly broke the mold the way Madonna didn't adult female pop Britney did for teen female pop.

ill continue later and get in my bag with deets

It always cracks me up when people think JIVE came up with anything. They were so incredibly incompetent and BROKE. It would be like praising Hollywood Records

Immaculate taste.

Thank you for reminding me I have to get started with it :jonnycat:

 Chiiiiilllleeeeee

Baybeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Alright here I go:

I'm glad they are now acknowledging her vision as THEY "the good ole boys" allowed the media to run with her being a puppet when they KNeW there idea didn't create the phenomenon.

They had another song slated as a single until Britney submitted BOMT.

BOMT was inspired by Max Martin being ghosted by some chick who wouldn't call him back.

he got wind of TLC prepping their comeback so he originally sent it to them. They politely declined saying they were wrapping up their album but the truth is the No Scrubs songbirds wouldn't release a song like BOMT as it goes against their feminist brand hit at least they inspired Max to do it. Then BSB was sent the song. I don't know WHY they turned it down but they claimed the same reasons as TLC which is a polite way of saying I don't like it for us but good luck with it for someone else…welp.

bsb would have been perfect for it and their audience would have melted over singing those songs thinking Nick Carter would ever give them the time of day. lol

Whatever Britney got it and they scrapped the original lead single and had to payout those promised the lead but they were not prominent songwriters like Diane Warren or aBabyface.

Boybands and girlbands dominated (bsb, Hanson, NSYNC spice girls and all saints) but they didn't have a breakout teen solo star and we all know bands have limited shelf life.

They tried to make Robyn a thing even pushing her to urban markets but her voice lacked the soul. She had two hits and faded.

then they tried to push xtina via soundtrack single for the Mulan movie. Song and album underperformed. In the 80s and 90s rock pop and hip hop acts were debuted on movie soundtracks as the label could tap into the movie budget as long as clips were included in the video for promotion.

then Natalie imbruglia was pushed but only had one hit.

all wonderful artists but had one common drawback: they were pushed out there to do what had already been done. They broke no mold or modernized an established blueprint.

Jive was going to be stupid enough to repeat the same mistake signing Britney to a 3 album teen pop contract which was enough to get the best out of her without having to keep her past the teen pop era.

She signed it.

They (label and video director) came up with a wack azz video treatment for BOMT but gave her a big close to million dollar budget. Their plan was to have her animated spinning around a record player and then as she says turns into a power ranger as monsters appear and she defeats them and then morphs into her real self does a victory dance and introduces herself to the 8-12 year old market they signed her up for.

As corny as that idea is: it would have worked and launched a 3-5 year career built solely on kids and tweens.

Nigel dick said she bluntly told him she didn't like the idea and the label went with her idea but slash the budget by 70% and that made the clothes budget no bigger than $25 a head Kmart attire.

This limitation actually made her more relatable as she tapped into around 7-8 markets which was unheard of for a teen act.

The label predicts a top 10 hit with sales of 3-5m in the US which means likely around 10m ww.

The results with her controversial vision:

#1 ww. Tripled/Quintupled US and WW expectations.

Changed the landscape of pop music.

This gave Max Martin who had cute disposable top 10 hits prior to have a watershed moment in his career to put him on the map with his 1st #1 hit. He is now behind two Beatles in terms of either having the most produced or most written #1 songs in the US. Without Britney, Max Martin wouldn't have been a go to for The Weeknd, Ariana, Taylor, kelly clarkson, pink and many others.

So in her debut era the two songs they pushed performed the least (from the bottom…and sometimes). She pushed for BOMT and crazy remix both landed top 10/1 on hot 100 and pop radio.

she wins all the awards and while on tour she had less than two weeks to record and complete her 2nd album.

she and Larry complete it but do not submit it and force Jives hand to renegotiate instead of waiting until after the 3rd album.

They planned for her 2nd album to serve as the first big release of the millennium which is why it was initially going to be called Platinum Millennium 2000 which is quite gimmicky and reemphasizes their goal to really cash in for the moment.

while in renegotiations they release born to make u happy ww.

The album that was supposed to be released in January/February was pushed to May 16, 2000 AFTER she negotiated a veterans deal and extended her contract to seven albums:

1–BOMT

2-Oops

3-Britney

4-In the zone

5-GHMP

6-BITM volume 1

7-Blackout (in another post I will get into why the last album on her contract during the worst moment of her life was crucial for her to succeed with even though the odds were against her)

Overall, Jive played ball as they wanted to capitalize off of the teen pop era even with a 7 album deal. I'll get into the sabotage plan they had to make albums 4-7 underperform so that the renegotiations were moot and worthless past albums 2 and 3 in another post.

In the end, her creativity was full force and she was influential and impact to future generations because she studied the best (Madonna, Janet, Michael, Paula, Cher and to a slight degree Princess)

BOMT takes elements from her studying Janet (massive choreography push), Michael (the ability make videos and music that sound. Like nothing else out there but still fit the sign of the times), and Madonna (the knack for including a provocative controversial element to get people talking).

Except applied to remodernizing and rebranding the teen blueprint.

With her extended and top notch contract she was able to reinvent the way teen pop stars accomplished longevity.

WHY! Because she targeted a wide universal audience from the beginning

Pre Britney, teen acts had to play it safe to target 4-14 year olds but kids are fickle. No matter what you do they want to identify with certain things at certain moments. For instance, I was into power rangers when I was in elementary school. By the time I hit junior high/middle school I wanted nothing to do with them.

80s teen pop girls like Debbie Gibson and Tiffany had to play it safe and they had two hit albums and faded once they became adults.

90s teen pop girls Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica and Leeann rimes had the same fate even though Aaliyah and Leeann had 3 multiplatinum albums for Leann it was during her teen years and for Aaliyah unfortunately her adult album went multiplatinum in Feb 2002 due to unfortunate circumstances which was still after Britney's Britney 3rd album went multiplatinum in December 2001.

No female teen star successfully transitioned from a multiplatinum teen to a multiplatinum adult until Britney.

Janet came close but her first two albums as a teen flopped (still not certified gold) and she didn't go multiplatinum until she took "control" as a 20 year old.

Britneys in the zone is what sealed the deal and she broke that glass ceiling and received her star on the Hollywood walk of fame all in the same months (November/December 2003).

Since then Miley, Selena, Taylor, Rihanna and others have been album to transition as multiplatinum teens to adulthood.

So yeah…

One of the reasons why Madonna is the queen of pop is because she broke the old mold so that pop music was considered BEFORE Madonna and AFTER Madonna.

Britney is the princess of pop as she accomplished the same thing for teen pop.

Had she not been sabotaged then she'd be the 21st century queen of pop to Madonnas 20th century and overall queen of pop honorific title.

Her reigning Princess of Pop honorific title (not to be confused with pop princess or ultimate pop princess Lizzo gave to Rihanna) is bittersweet as she was in line and passed the torched but then got burned but Princess of Pop is STILL a legendary and iconic position.
