Ladies it wasn't just the video... It was already showing signs of underperformance before that and the pre-historic ATRL gays were posting that gif of Demi Lovato drowning in a pool after every iTunes and radio update.

It was a mix of Roar/DH oversaturation and people being tired of the bubblegum Luke - Bonnie - Katy sound that they already had too many songs of. A shame because it's one of their best but it will eventually have its moment. It's one TikTok birthday trend away.

Overexposure

Not a good single choice and one of the worst music videos ever released.

It always blows my mind how this song failed but maroon 5 copied the song AND the video and got a hit.

You cannot say it did bad because it's a bad song when Sugar was a smash 1 year later and they sound almost the same...

I do think the video killed it, she could've done something sexy and sultry with it but we know Katy and her team were showing early signs of stupidness and went ahead to release such an awful video.

I think this song was just a little too bland next to Roar and DH to really take off and then yes the video killed the little momentum it had. Even Unconditionally faired better.

Birthday is mid and not that bad, we should be giving all the hate to this is how we do. That song started her career decline

I actually love Birthday. the video is really horrible but the song has a contagious energy that is just impossible for me to escape. I know the lyrics are kinda cringe lol, but I just love it and I'm unbothered.

Bad song, worse video.

Felt like she was tryna capitalize on another "holiday", something that could be played annually, but the song missed the mark for me and the video probably turned a huge chunk of her fandom off.

The song is a bop and the video is cute, fun and fit the theme so well, even the lyric video is a serve too.
