Is Ariana's longevity underrated?

Shes never had an era as big as Born This Way, PRISM, Midnights or even Dangerously In Love, LOUD, all of which are eras that arent even the biggest of their respective artists' repertoire.

But she also has never had a flop like ARTPOP, Witness, or even a minor era like Speak Now or Renaissance. Shes always had a RED or Talk that Talk level of smash per era and I think that absolutely helped her longevity.

Shes always been comfortably a #2 or #3 popgirl every calendar year while other women like Katy, Gaga, even Taylor fluctuate in success and relevance. Its her case to make for being an eventual pop music legend.

I think the comparison eras are off in this, but agree with the sentiment. Ariana's peaks are notably lower than most other MPGs but the range between her biggest and smallest eras is also smaller than every other pop girl.

While none of us expect an Ariana album to be competing for the biggest album of the year, we all generally expect a solid performance with moderately big single.

She she ends up being one of the biggest artists of all time via longevity and consistency.

  • I know longevity is a foreign concept to you as an Xtina stan, but getting a #1 13 years into your career is definitely longevity

Yes, a solo #1 something Xtina hasn't seen since the Bush administration

The irony of this statistic is that it only proves OP's point further with context.

She has accumulated these 10 #1s in a quick span of 7 years from 2019-2026. So the fact that this statistic doesn't include any of her plethora of iconic smash hits between 2013-2018 is yet another testament to her long-term success.

maybe because of my age, but Thank U Next era felt much bigger to me than how it's being discussed here. all eyes were on her, the #1 #2 #3 on Billboard, thank u next going to 7 rings, her aesthetic that era defined a whole generation. it feels bigger to me than a lot of eras cited here.

Come to think of it, artists who have debuted alongside her are now nowhere to be seen. When a new crop of pop girls appear, they always tend to be compared to Ariana. She always feels current.

As was already stated here, she might not have monstrous eras, but she is always consistent. There's really something about her staying power that is underrated.

I would also like to add that despite her doing what she wanted (releasing whenever she wanted during the SWT-TUN era) and despite allegedly always releasing the same thing, people still listen to her. I guess it's just her voice that makes you want to listen to her or at least not skip her songs when they come in shuffle. I've been a fan for 13 years already and it really is that voice that makes me stay.

I feel like it's pretty accepted that she's never flopped. I feel like her career feels shorter than it actually is because her dominant phases came at a time where long eras basically died (along with Covid and her acting career changing her focuses as well).

It was a cultural moment for sure, I think some people mentally compete to it 1989 or teenage dream and underrated it because of that lol

The TUN era feels less big than what it was because of her personal life, I think. The song itself is very tied with her dating list, so the discussion was less about the quality and popularity of the songs, but rather Ariana the person. And also because the album felt pretty much dead after the release of BUWYG, since no other singles came after that, and she went straight to the ST.

Teenage dream having 8 singles with the complete collection, and 1989 having 7 just adds to the grandness of it all.

Ariana's longevity is more tied with the connection she has with her fans rather than the quality of her music, since she never had a release that felt too out of place or outside her comfort zone, for good or bad. She has a polarizing image, but not a polarizing sound.

It was huge. ATRL is old and out of touch.

Anyone saying Ariana doesn't have huge eras is not true. My Everything is approaching 20M EAS and still pushing 5500+ global units daily. TUN and DW are going to be up there too when all is said and done. She doesn't have any flops. She's like Beyoncé, no TD or The Fame sized era but never underperforms and all her albums are hits. This site overrates peaks. Yeah Katy has TD but that's 85% of her career.

Also when you think about how abundant her list of hits are across 13 years, only Rihanna can really outpace her in the hitmaking department. Sure others have way bigger hits but the amount of moderate to big hits Ariana has churned the past 13 years is near unparalleled.

The Way, Problem, Bang Bang, Break Free, Love Me Harder, One Last Time Dangerous Woman, Into You, Side to Side, No Tears, God is a Woman, TUN, 7R, Break Up, Boyfriend, Stuck with U, Rain on Me, Positions, 69, Die for You and Save Your Tears remix, Yes And?, WCBF, HTIMYLM and her annual smash Santa Tell Me.

Across 13 years youd be hard pressed to find any popgirl with that many hits in a short amount of time, Taylor, Katy, Gaga and even Bey herself would fall short of the amount of hits Ariana has produced (size is an entirely different story) in their first 13 yrs

Sure. But Ariana's power was always longevity. In those calendar release years she has never been the de facto pop force. 2014 was Meghan and Taylor's year. 2019 was hers for like 3 months before Billie took the world by storm. 2024 was Sabrina's breakthrough

Sabrina didn't have the #1 album of the year in 2024 either and only had one #1 hit in the US so is SnS not a huge peak because she wasn't outselling Taylor or Billie?

My Everything was objectively huge. There is some revisionist history happening here. Problem was the 9th biggest digital sale week of all-time and 5th biggest female debut of all time selling 438k first week. Bang Bang and Break Free were huge hits. Love Me Harder was also another top 10 and was a hit. During Summer 2014 she had three songs in the top 10 at once, one of the only female artists to achieve that. My Everything was the 2nd biggest female era in 2014 behind 1989.

TUN was also massive and a cultural moment. It literally broke ELEVEN Guinness World Records and that was mostly chart and streaming records. It broke the record for biggest on-demand streaming week for a pop album and by a female artist with 307M on-demand streams in the US. TUN was #8 biggest on-demand streaming week in the US and was the only pop album present in the top 20 biggest streaming weeks as it was surrounded by hip-hop albums. To put this in perspective albums like WWAFAWDWG, SnS, HMHAS, SOUR, etc. did not reach that streaming peak debut week. Taylor couldn't break that record until Midnights. She occupied the top 3 spots on the BB Hot 100 with the three singles from TUN which was only done once before by The Beatles 55 years prior in 1964 (!!). TUN charted 11 out of 12 tracks in the top 40. It was a streaming juggernaut and broke tons of records. She absolutely dominated 2018-2019 and it's revisionist to say otherwise.
