Pitchfork drags Runway

Featured Replies

I mean, I like Runway, but they aren't wrong. Gaga doesn't make much opportunity out of the soundtracks she ties herself to. Monsters always say "it's a soundtrack song, what do you expect?" as if soundtrack songs haven't sometimes been some of the greatest of all time - even for Gaga. Shallow is somewhat of an experiment as it doesn't follow a particular structure and doesn't sound like an obvious hit, but it was iconic. You can't forget that "Vogue" was also for a soundtrack.

It made even less sense for The Dead Dance to be so basic and childish when the success they were trying to emulate came from "Bloody Mary," one of her most experimental and gothic album tracks. She can still make amazing music as evidenced on Mayhem, but after Hold My Hand, The Dead Dance, and now Runway, I hope she takes the hint that soundtrack songs don't have to be so sanitized, and frankly no one really wants a basic Gaga. There would be nothing wrong with serving an Abracadabra for a soundtrack.

I'm still confused why RuPaul wasn't called for this. It probably would've added to the song and avoided comparisons because let's face it, it's heavily inspired by him.

Bet she's pissed lmfao

I do agree here. I think she tries for 'mass appeal' with these soundtracks songs (Hold My Hand, Dead Dance) and ends up losing some of that special unique flavor that makes her songs so special.

still, better than anything Miley, Taylor, Rhianna, Katy, Britney... (who am I missing?) literally have created the worst and most sanitized soundtrack songs Ive ever heard... Runway is 10s better because at least its a fun bop sorry

Yeah it's not really surprising. The songs she released for the soundtrack are really bad but I don't think it means anything. Her next studio album will obviously be better than these songs.

It's not a great song but it's not trying to be. I do see Ms. Kiana has a pinned photo of Beyonce on her IG so I wouldn't take any critique, good or bad, too seriously.

Love Gaga, but she should have not collaborated with that girl suburban

not too much on Ooh La La, that bop is better than all the Gaga soundtrack songs you're talking about

the way katy and gaga served panned flop with doechii… #ThankYouDoechii

Katy served 3 panned flops in a row though so what's your excuse for that?

It's just a fun bop and it's not trying to be anything more than that. I like the three songs. Pop fans these days are too serious. Let's just have fun and enjoy that we're getting new music from her.

That whole album was bad in general lol

You're awfully sensitive about the Doechii collab being a CHOP

Why?

"Runway" also takes cues from Madonna's "Vogue," as Gaga and Doechii urge us to "poooose." Doing that successfully, however, would require songwriting that adds something novel to the queer pop canon, or a beat that sounds less like the ghost of more interesting hits that preceded it.

rip

Um? Where is the part of me being sensitive?

Not everything is going to be a Grammy winning award worthy song! This is for a soundtrack and you can tell they were having fun!

Not everyone can serve a fun, yet tongue-in-cheek LGBT+ song like Right Back

The same can be said about most of her dance sings this decade tbh, poor Stefania has lost her mojo for ghey music 15 years ago
