The Pitchfork review is pathetic and sounds like that journalist had already made up his mind beforehand because Charli XCX said that dancing is now uncool. Superbloom is really not the type of album where the whole dancefloor conversation is even relevant imo? The fact that it's being pitted against Robyn's Sexistential in their last paragraph is also unbelievably tone deaf? Just my two cents below…

While WYP? was literally meant for actual nightclubs (ironic for a pandemic-era album), Superbloom is wildly different as it depicts disco mostly in a theatrical, non-literal way, as if you were seeing it through the lens of a stage play or a vintage Hollywood movie. One would think it really couldn't be more obvious when there's an interpolation of a legendary Hollywood score in there, includes diva-esque titles such as 'Don't You Know Who I Am?', and you've got 16 Summers which is very Broadway / West End inspired.

That! Feels Good was already leaning towards this direction, but in hindsight it's middle ground between the other two albums, while on Superbloom she fully went for this Norma Desmond goes to Studio 54 vibe.

I kinda expected this low score from them. lol

I felt like they were already acting weird with her when they gave T!FG! a BNM without giving it a single BNT. lol

But I know that acting like she's some type mid artist is pure rage bait and dumb lol

She's one of the best vocalists we have out there, she has her own type of writing. The album might have one or two missteps but as a whole? It's a strong body of work.

One of the things that made WYP? that album was her switch from "sadness" to queen of the dancefloor. And I don't remember seeing her saying she wanted to take the dancefloor with an album again, the direction was clear: soul music. She sure did some fan service but what's wrong with that? Who buys her albums and tickets? lol

I don't expect her to release a new What's Your Pleasure?, I don't expect her to release a rock album, I just expect her to release good music and that's what Superbloom gave me.

This reminded me of one part of the p4k review that annoyed me in a particular way.

"Ware's adherence to such rigid disco blueprints also has the knock-on effect of making her voice sound less remarkable than it actually is."

like this makes no sense to me because the cinematic production complements her voice beautifully and really allows it to soar. if the album isn't someone's thing that's whatever, but idk this specific critique feels like we didn't listen to the same record!

And it's not just about how she sounds on the record, cause she sounds amazing as always, but it's about her delivery too, which is always on point and she is a very expressive vocalist.

I guess it's easier to say something about her voice, like it was said on the review, when you and your faves cannot sing like that.
