There were interesting subjects to explore with Joanne but ultimately presenting the album as a more authentic side of herself while still being guarded held back its potential. I also wouldn't want to be a pop star at Gaga's level of fame and divulge family trauma to the world so I get it, she kind of did it to the best of her ability without giving a way too much of herself. This is one of the times where I think her level of success was detrimental to the art. But I still find it to be an interesting piece of her puzzle. Its just if she wasn't a mainstream pop artist maybe there could have been a version of Joanne that explored her daddy issues and her heartbreak on a deeper level. I mean she tired to sell Perfect Illusion as a commentary on social media and avoided the fact that it was about Taylor Kinney. Also the whole concept of it being about her dead aunt who she never met, I think the more interesting angle was her trying to heal her dad and how his trauma affected her family but you don't really get that, its pretty surface level.

I rarely see people engaging with Joanne thoughtfully and not just calling it bad (which is fine and I get it), so yayyy I love this

Thoughts on Joanne spoilered cause long

I agree that it had a lot of creative potential that it didn't quite live up to. I listened to it a lot when it came out and loved having an album of more mid tempo, softer songs from her, but there are so many different directions she could've taken with it that would've been more interesting and daring. But I'm sympathetic to it - it feels like a project that's trying to do a million things (heal her dad, sell authenticity, make the female Uptown Funk via Ayo lol), and I still think it's good in spite of that!

It also feels like a really interesting time capsule in her career. Throughout the era, it felt like she was insisting to the world, "I'm actually this real and authentic person!" but she was still figuring herself out. She was 30, and a lot of people spend their whole lives trying to define and recreate themselves over and over. She got famous as a young twenty something and had to grow up in front of the world! So idk, I think the Joanne persona was a calculation that she was committed to but didn't actually feel at home in. But what's more real than trying (& ultimately failing) to be something you're not?

But I appreciate the album & era for what it was.
