ASCAP is a royalty database, not a verified list of real or released songs. Writing a song and registering it there just tells ASCAP who should get paid if it's ever performed — it doesn't confirm the song is finished, released, or even used.

To register something, you do have to be an ASCAP member, so it's not literally open to anyone. But that bar is pretty low — lots of unknown and independent writers are members. You don't need an LLC (that's optional for publishing), and you're mostly entering the information yourself rather than submitting hard proof upfront.

This matters because members can register:

• demos

• working titles

• songs they're pitching to artists

• or tracks that never get released at all

So an ASCAP entry doesn't prove "this is a Beyoncé song" — it just means someone has claimed a share in a composition with that title.
