It's noisy, I'll give you that. It's not as bad as BTINH had though. At least she took a swing with Ring the Alarm, and tried something new for her. BTINH was a regression all the way back to B'Day and to a style that had already been copied been maxed out by others.

Both of these songs peak with their bridge and unfortunately Best Thing I Ever Had ate severely especially with those harmonies. Give it up delish!

In a reality where BEYONCÉ, Lemonade, RENAISSANCE, and COWBOY CARTER exist, I do think that saying 4 is her best album might suggest something about the person claiming it. And that's what a dog whistle is. Not wanting to say something directly but saying it in another way.

To say it's your personal favourite is one thing, but to claim it as her best album? It seems purposefully defiant. I don't know how I'm better than noticing that when the topic of her albums comes up (particularly on Twitter), there's always a non-fan/hater saying "4 is her best album". Perhaps it's just my bias towards the four albums mentioned, but it seems absurd to proclaim is her BEST album when all that have followed have outdone it in most ways. To me this is a sort of reaction against the figure Beyoncé became after, not wanting to acknowledge what she has achieved, so ignoring it to say something of less artistic value is a greater work.

Bidet is cute and has massive bops (including loud ass Ring the Alarm) but it sounds like it was made in a week

production quality alone makes it ineligible for Top 4 Beyoncé albums

I don't think we are getting anything before the Met Gala.

It being such a BIG event, she having such a big role in it, I think this is gonna be her public "debut" for this era, and then thinks will start occurring after it.

I could be wrong, though.

That's kind of what makes it so great for me. It has this intense, fervent, go-go-go energy and it's reflected in more direct, purposeful lyrics that actually relate to the other songs on the album, or at least the ones before or after it.

I see 4 as Beyoncé sharpening her tools.

And she did so fabulously. But though she took a year off before making it, I don't think she came back to the album making process with any direct statement she wanted to say as an artist. I think the open-ended possibilities of a post-Mathew era offered a chance to try anything she wanted but when putting it all together, I don't think it created something that compares at all with anything that followed.

I think all good art requires some parameters for creativity to allow the artist to really explore solutions and guide choices. All her albums after 4 were clearly guided by a concept, principle or statement she was wanting to make, and that includes EIL and they are all the better for it.

I'm thankful she had this album to understand what she can do both as a manager and an artist, and sort of thankful it underperformed such that it made her move focus from how something is marketed to how it is built.

"Lay Up Under Him"

Bey's Top 4 consists of her last 4 albums.

4closure and Bidet aren't in the conversation.

I like that it's cohesive but then you have Resentment and Irreplaceable which frankly do not fit in sonically, and feel like they were added to boost variety and secure a potential hit single. Baby Yoncé had a vision but I'm afraid she wasn't given enough time to execute it.

I cannot believe you hags are in here dragging B'Day. An album with good, to great to exceptional songs like:

Beautiful Liar , Green Light, Kitty Kat, Upgrade U, Flaws and All, Get Me Bodied , If, Freakum Dress, Suga Mama, Déjà-vu, Ring the Alarm, Resentment and Listen should never up for dragging!!

B'Day and 4 are the best albums out of her first 4 studio albums.

I've seen a few people say Bodyguard is making some noise on TikTok (yet to see a video myself so I think it's just fan driven) but I had to laugh at the thought of it finally going viral after all this time, right as she is about to launch the new era's leads.

and another thing!

me-explaining-talking.gif

B'DAY is the most BEYONCE album in her discography!

Everything about B'Day embodies and screams Beyonce!

It's basically Beyonce in audio form.

I thank you!

They don't fit sonically, but at least that is explained by the narrative of the album itself.

Those songs are the conclusion of the album. Irreplaceable is preceded by Green Light where Beyoncé is fed up and telling her man he's free to go. Irreplaceable marks a change as she's watching him pack up his things. I've always taken the song (before the video came out) to be her lying to herself that he's so irreplaceable, so I think this switch up actually makes sense. Then Resentment follows where she goes into great detail how hurt she is and how much she can't get over it. A stark contrast lyrically to claiming "I'll have another you by tomorrow".

Even if we don't read Irreplaceable as her not saying what she means, its change still marks the end of the album. She is no longer so tightly wound, and the relaxed sing-song nature of the song reflects her changed state. It also harkens back to Ring the Alarm and Upgrade U by mentioning the things she bought him that he has to leave.

It may sound rushed, but the songs are all very well connected.

Irreplaceable directly after Green Light is actually the perfect transition?

that ne-yo track and the victoria beckham reject (Resentment) are haphazard additions to the album's sonic landscape.

Listen

is a hidden bonus track that is originally on a different album.
