When was the last time you streamed Break My Soul? Looking back idk how the hell we got it to #1

I listen to Rennaissance all the time so I listen to it in context of the album but I never really seek it out independently.

Her "let the music speak for itself" approach works for Renaissance because the album is tight, but Cowboy Carter is so layered and over-conceptualized that visuals would've worked to understand it better.

It tries to be radio programming, but it's also a tv show in which she performs Ya Ya, but it also features a random audio from Dolly P, and each song it's a reinterpretation of a western movie through the Cowboy Carter character too, and the whole album plays like it's own narrative beginning and ending with the same song and displaying its lyrics as opening/closing credits of a movie, and then the visuals for I'm That Girl and the Amen lyric video show that it's… a play?

To this day, I'm still confused with the concept.

COWBOY CARTER'S radio theme is continued in YA YA because The Linda Martell Show is a reference to a tradition of live variety shows aired on radio. The Grand Ole Opry is a great, iconic example of this, but it was not the only one.

If we think that RENAISSANCE was afro-futurism (imagining a future in order to be able to attain it) then COWBOY CARTER is re-imagining parts of the past in order to situate her place in the present. The Linda Martell Show is a great example of this because it re-writes her history. She didn't leave country music after one album, instead she became a star so big she had her own show.

I think this is furthered in the structure of the album. As you said, it is bookended with the same song (more or less), but to get back to where we started we need to go from traditional country, to broader country sounds, to genre-blended country productions that situate Black sounds like hip-hop, R&B and rock alongside the black sound that is country. It's like she rewrote country history her way, and now we can start fresh, she wiped a slate clean, so to speak, and it's interesting because the album immediately helped launch one of the biggest country songs of all time: Shaboozey's A Bar Song (Tipsy).

And I think you're overcomplicating the rest. The bit about each song being inspired by a western movie is trivia, not required knowledge to enjoy or understand the album.

I don't understand why her and Jay do the Oscars gold party.

They aren't even in the movie industry. She even stopped sharing her looks for the night.

Not your eyes and ears being closed to one of her most musically complex and vocally delicious songs in her discography…

because its a horrible visual for an ok song

Bodyguard, Daughter, and Tyrant are a million times better than American Requiiem.

What if I said these 4 songs belong in the 10 BEST songs in her entire discography:

VIRGOS GROOVE

AMERICAN REQUIEM

DEJA VU

CRAZY IN LOVE

I think Tyrant, Bodyguard, and Daughter are my trinity from Capitalist Carter.
